“The Labour Party will:
Ban all conversion therapy
Protect and uphold the Equality Act
Require employers to create workplaces free from LGBT+ harassment
Bring in tougher sentences for LGBT+ hate crimes
Modernise the outdated Gender Recognition Act.”

It says a lot that after months of criticism about a lack of identifiable policy, one of the first concrete statements from Labour is on this subject.

What do they mean “workplaces free from LGBT+ harassment”? Isn’t there already protection under the law from harassment due to sexuality or gender reassignment? And why should one protected characteristic attract higher sentences for hate crimes than any other? Finally of course they throw in the dear old “we will protect the EqA” without seemingly any consideration of whether this is consistent with (eg) reforming the GRA (and no details of how it will be modernised, I see).

Meanwhile Wes Streeting tweets “my lifetime I’ve seen, been part of, and benefited from, the onward march towards LGBT equality, but those who would turn the clock back are visible, well-funded and organised.” Who could he possibly be taking a pot shot at?

Directly the kids started running the internet this was always going to flow into real life.

What does this mean for women in practise?

not sure what the detail is

Nobody is sure what the detail is which is why you’ve got trans activists on twitter claiming it is anti-trans and women on here claiming it is anti-woman.

Anything that Labour has to say on this issue is vague by design. My impression is that Labour want self-id and policies based on gender identity but at the same time they want people who think this is bad for women and girls to continue voting for them. They think they can achieve this by being as vague as possible whilst simultaneously pretending that they are being clear.

If they gain power I can imagine there is nothing they won’t do to pander to trans activists because they don’t know how to say no. They are too scared of being perceived as “transphobic”. But if they think the trans activists will be happy once self id is brought in they are deluded. Next step will be a push to update the EA to include “gender identity” as a PC and to remove the exceptions that allow for single sex services and sports.
