100% of their profits from their pride t-shirts are going to the mermaids charity www.facebook.com/Poundland/

God that's pretty irresponsible. Especially given recent events.

achillestoes · 25/06/2022 16:53

So that’s two organisations that mainly flog shite.

LondonBased · 26/06/2022 08:29

Sainsburys too. I don't think these companies do any research. Just rainbows and bandwagons.

achillestoes · 26/06/2022 08:29

Sainsbury’s not stocking the t-shirt in-store. I wonder why...

LondonBased · 26/06/2022 08:38

No, not Tshirts. Sainsburys are donating a percentage of their profits during the whole of Pride month to an organisation called Sparkle. They in turn donate to and promote a few questionable organisations including Mermaids.

LondonBased · 26/06/2022 08:41

Sainsburies and Waitrose are exhorting me to purchase all manner of rainbow stuff.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 26/06/2022 08:52

This is the thing I always keep in mind whenever I think “ffs how do ppl not know the damage mermaids or stonewall have caused, can’t we stop yet” is that no we can’t. Even now this is only vaguely beginning to penetrate while mermaids & stonewall have teams of ppl whose job it is to go to companies and tell them how wonderful they are and how they are saving the lives of “trans children” whilst peddling their completely debunked zombie fact suicide statistics

there is so much still to do

FannyCann · 26/06/2022 08:55

Waitrose send me emails offering me the option to opt out of receiving emails about Mother's Day or Father's Day but I have yet to receive an email offering me the option to opt out of pride month.

LondonBased · 26/06/2022 09:11

I have yet to see any company donating to charities that support people with disabilities, for example. I would be more than happy to shop somewhere that did that.

donquixotedelamancha · 26/06/2022 09:14

The post says it has 72/2 comments but I can only see 18 when I unhide them all.

I wonder whether negative ones are being deleted but still show in the count? It will be interesting to see whether my comment stands.

Regardless I think the best way to dissuade companies from supporting Mermaids is to show them the reputational harm it does in SM.

Even if our comments are deleted, they will notice having to do that a lot for a post where they were expecting only positive responses.

I've just been sent an email from daughter's school all about their Pride month activity and giving a link to Mermaids ...

I wish I felt confident to challenge it.

Are we the same school? Am not happy that their non uniform day is pay up to Mermaids charity

Signalbox · 28/06/2022 18:39

Capitalism loves trans ideology. There is so much money to be made!

Can the children still wear their uniform if they wish?

It might be the better option.

Glittertwins · 28/06/2022 19:08

@onmytodd78 : then she will get singled out and bullied for it

Braggiography · 28/06/2022 19:10

Perfect pairing, really.

Braggiography · 28/06/2022 19:11

I wonder if Poundland sell balaclavas? And I WONDER HOW MUCH THEY ARE?!

NC12345665 · 28/06/2022 19:14

Another company that can fuck off to the far side of fuck.

lanadelgrey · 28/06/2022 19:40

Disability month is nominally December - really says it all really as all mention is drowned out in tinsel and Santas.
Commerce loves an ‘event’ to market so every possible juncture there is one: Christmas, Valentines, Easter, Pride, summer holidays, back to school, Halloween, Christmas.
it was an enormous stroke of luck that Pride happens to fall during a gap in the market and business rushed in, rubbing their hands and eyeing the cash gleefully.
if they could decently market Black history month, they would.

There wasn't a mention of fundraising with the non uniform day, so possibly not. But two links at the bottom of the email, one for mermaids and the other for a local support service.

Mine will fully support it, they have swallowed the whole thing. I'm fighting against the tide.

Glittertwins · 28/06/2022 20:14

Mine fortunately have not fallen for it but equally I don't want them bullied or worse by "friends" or teachers. I've had enough of the so called friends as it is!

FourChimneys · 28/06/2022 20:19

Mine would have been ill that day.

WooFighters · 28/06/2022 20:19

For school uniform days you are under no legal obligation to pay. They aren't allowed to chase you for donations and most schools just have a pot and don't do by register anymore.
So any charities you disagree with I'd just not pay, lots of people don't anyway for various other reasons.
Let your children wear whatever they want and they don't have to follow any ridiculous rainbow or dress up remit.

Glittertwins · 28/06/2022 20:25

Thank you, we thought the same. The school can take it up with us if they wish, they will not get far.

I'm sure I read that Sex Matters will send a copy of their excellent advice for schools to named members of staff in a school if you contact them? Don't have time to scour the website but I'd urge parents to protest wherever possible. Organisations like Mermaids pushing the "puberty blockers, yay" narrative have no business being anywhere near children:
