Really tried to find a thread about this but there doesn't seem to be.

So, Hadley Freeman once again nails it. Shame this couldn't be in the Guardian

Absolutely wonderful piece. Hadley Freeman is everything Zoe Williams thinks she is (but isn't).

Really excellent piece. I well remember when my first child was born, one of the things I had to get my head round fast was that I was the parent and I knew better than she did. To keep her safe, I had to overcome my reluctance to yell in public ('Don't touch that, hot!' etc) and I had to be clear and not over-complicated when I explained things. Also, crucially, I was in charge. I decided what happened, not her, because I had all the facts. I'm talking about the early 1990s and even then I could see that some other parents were struggling with the idea of telling a child what to do or not do. My parents and their contemporaries never did. I wouldn't want to have taken the authoritarian approach they did, but it's not either or.

That is an excellent article.

SallyLockheart · 15/06/2022 20:41

that is spot on, brilliant.

mrshoho · 15/06/2022 20:57

I really enjoyed reading this. She nails it and adds humour without detracting from the harsh realities.

parietal · 15/06/2022 21:03

wow, excellent writing.

tobee · 15/06/2022 21:18

Just brilliant!

Just thinking about this a bit more.

Anyone reading this article who doesn't see the truth of this is either brainwashed or has an agenda.

Hadley Freeman is a must read journalist for me now, her and Janice Turner. They both often seem to take my messy thoughts on an issue and knock them into something clear and concise, and often funny.

Zoe Williams is a 'don't bother to' read anymore.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 15/06/2022 22:45

Thoughtful piece written in an admirably clear style.

guinnessguzzler · 15/06/2022 22:49

Yes, Hadley getting it right again.

TheBiologyStupid · 15/06/2022 22:57

An excellent piece by Hadley - thanks, diningiswest.

“I’d ask her what she thought she could do as a boy that she can’t do as a girl, and I’d ask if she wanted to be a boy, or did she want to be different person,” I said.

“But it’s the daughter’s choice,” my friend said.

“It would be her choice if she wanted to self-harm. But I wouldn’t buy her the razor,” I replied.

Excellent article. Its all the things I've been brooding over, but couldn't articulate properly.
