Yet again, alcohol being used to excuse a mans behaviour

"Judge Bryan Smyth adjourned the case at Dublin District Court for a probation report, and to find out more about the accused’s level of intoxication on the night."

I don't see what his alcohol consumption has to do with his behaviour, other than trying to excuse it.

I used to work with ex-offenders, including sex offenders. There were two things we looked for to work out their current risk. One was use of violent and sexual media (particularly porn) and the other was substance use. What would happen is that the man would decide to offend (or feel more and more that he wanted to) and use media and substances to disinhibit and give excuses (both to himself and the Courts).

The sober man had ALREADY decided to offend. Everything from that point on was planning.

There is an unfortunate narrative that sex offences like this are one-offs, unfortunate mistakes, drunken silliness. We know they're not.

That was eye-opening and disturbing in equal measure, @MrsTerryPratchett
