You couldn't make it up

Tory rift over call for woman to replace Neil Parish after Commons porn scandal.

"Caroline Nokes, chairwoman of the equalities committee, said the Conservatives could display “real evidence of change” if they ensured their candidate in the impending Tiverton & Honiton by-election was a woman."

But but but...what is a woman, Caroline? Do let us know!

The best candidate should get the role woman man or any combination of the two (which people may or may not believe exists).

OvaHere · 02/05/2022 09:37

Tbh that makes no sense. The Tories have quite a number of female MPs. One more isn't going to change ingrained attitudes of the men. Great if a woman does get elected to the seat but it doesn't show evidence of anything particularly.

And of course usual caveat of what is a woman Caroline. 🙄

tabbycatstripy · 02/05/2022 09:40

How’s she going to work that one out, then?

tabbycatstripy · 02/05/2022 09:41

But also, it’s undemocratic. I want someone to represent me who I agree with, not someone with a similar body type.

zanahoria · 02/05/2022 09:42

Lisa Townsend

tabbycatstripy · 02/05/2022 09:43

Lisa Townsend - good shout.

OvaHere · 02/05/2022 09:44

zanahoria · 02/05/2022 09:42

Lisa Townsend

She can replace Blunt who leaving soon. 😂

OvaHere · 02/05/2022 09:48

Thinking further about this it really is an example of tokenism - let's stick a woman in the seat, that will fix things.

Actually electing a throughly decent man who doesn't sexually harass, use pornography in the HoC and speaks out on those things would be better evidence of real change.

SpindleInTheWind · 02/05/2022 09:49

I saw that Crispin Blunt is to stand down at the next General Election. It’s in the Independent.

I guess his local constituency party weren’t very happy with him. I gather they had quite the postbag about his deranged defence of the sex offender Khan.

Rightsraptor · 02/05/2022 10:09

Blunt standing down? Made my day.😄

Blunt standing down? Made my day.😄

Apparently so. But not till the next Election.

Unless he pulls off another spectacular revealing of his dark soul.

Rightsraptor · 02/05/2022 10:37

I hope Lisa Townsend can be persuaded to stand.

Helleofabore · 02/05/2022 10:40

yes!! Lisa, will you run as an MP please?

Abhannmor · 02/05/2022 10:41

Makes sense. Less likely to be a porn addict.Get a local Devonian woman. Carry on destroying Britain. As you were chaps.

Agree!

GrimDamnFanjo · 02/05/2022 10:53

Very likely to be a female candidate anyway as the tories are trying to move to a 50/50 split.

TheWeeDonkey · 02/05/2022 10:58

Surely it should be the best person for the job? Plenty of women in politics have proven to be useless when it comes to representing their female constituents.

ControversialOpening · 02/05/2022 11:12

parish is missing a trick here. Why hasn’t he come out as transgender? There’d be dozens lining up to congratulate him … er, her … and tell her how stunning and brave she was. Probably even an article from LOJ.

Genius!
I second that motion.

Didn't save Wallis in Bridgend. Though he has a promising second career as a victim/ martyr come to think of it?

He should come out as tractor-mantic. Compete with own flag and demands for day of #tractormanticvisibility.

Did I say day, I meant month, obviously.

It's so frustrating, isn't it? I look at women in politics today and I see the likes of Penny Mordaunt, Caroline Nokes, Maria Miller, Dawn Butler, Lisa Nandy, Layla Moran, Wera Hobhouse and Mhairi Black all happily shitting all over women's rights and I could bloody scream.

And don't even get me started on Nicols 'Dying Breath' Sturgeon.

The idea of All Women Shortlists, especially for the more winnable seats, was such a great idea at first, to help mitigate against the ingrained structural inequalities faced by women. Now they are open to men; and far too many actual women in politics have absorbed too much of the gender woo. So instead of fighting against inequality, AWS will just reinforce it.

howonearthdidwegethere · 02/05/2022 12:33

Jamie Wallis would be perfect. I'm sure that's who Ms Nokes was thinking of.

howonearthdidwegethere · 02/05/2022 12:33

And Labour could stand Eddie Izzard.

MangyInseam · 02/05/2022 12:36

Well I suppose she should just march down go tell the constituents who they should be choosing. Though that might not be as good a look, kind of anti-democratic telling people which candidates they should have.
