"For anyone who identifies as a woman"

I've seen an advert for a women-only outdoors leader training course. Except it's for 'anyone who identifies as a women'

What is the point of women-only if it's actually for anyone?

What were they trying to achieve with women only?

Why make it for anyone who identifies as a woman - does that achieve the original issue?

Where does it leave women who don't identify as one? Trans identified females? Gender critical women? (We know they can just stay at home out of the way and shut up!)

Why? Just why?

And why does it make me feel so churned up and weird? It was a random sponsored post on insta yet it really gets to me...

I would far rather go on a course that is openly mixed sex, with usual separation in place for changing etc, and the potential conflict acknowledged (being physically assisted by someone of the opposite sex for eg) than go on a trip where the only criteria is indefinable and possibly appeals more to people who want to stereotype women, or enjoy making women feel uncomfortable...

It's making women to be an identity not a fact
Which is implying that there are are things about being a woman beyond biology

Ie lady brain by another phrase

As a woman who has fought the lady brain stereotypes all her life that would feel like a kick in the teeth

It's such a pity as have tons of experience to offer such a group but can't bring myself to get involved because it's so unwelcoming

BinBandit · 25/04/2022 08:08

I presume the point was to increase representation of women able to lead outdoor stuff/as a role model for women and girls. But let's still have men do that...... 🙄

Triotriotrio · 25/04/2022 08:09

Well, that would count me out given that I don't identify as a woman... I just am one! What company was it?

mudgetastic · 25/04/2022 08:10

Yeah why have an old woman when you can have some men instead

borntobequiet · 25/04/2022 08:15

I’ve just filled in an application form that had so many “identify as” questions that all they know about me is my date of birth and the fact that I’m white. I preferred not to say on all the others as I don’t identify as anything.
Its so stupid.

I have previously been involved in quite a lot of outdoor pursuits and they generally are led by men (the male kind) and lots of the equipment is still much more tailored to male bodies etc

Increasing representation and participation for women in thinks like canoeing and climbing is really important and I imagine a course like this could be really effective. Having more women leading a climb may encourage women who would otherwise feel anxious about having their harness fitted and adjusted by a man for eg.

But if it's a course that could have a man/men there because they identify as a woman - then that puts me off massively!

I don't identify as a woman. By most stereotyping I don't fit the bill at all! I am biologically female for sure and have the menstruation-related anaemia and small frame to go with.

I don’t identify as anything.

lapasion · 25/04/2022 08:58

I hate that term too. I had an email recently about a return to work course. I work in an industry that women often leave when they have kids, as it can be quite demanding and difficult to get back into. It’s clearly been set up for women returning to work after taking time off as a SAHM or caring for relatives but is open to “those who identify as women and nonbinary persons” so literally anyone can apply, making the purpose of the scheme pointless.

The outdoor sport/active living world (including "lifestyle" brands associated with it) have been hit particularly badly by TRAs in my view - firstly probably because when BLM came around, there was a genuine case to answer about the diversity of people participating in hillwalking, surfing etc, but now many companies and brands have gone full-on "identify as" because they have conflated transwomen into the issue. I suspect it's because they're really intimidated and don't have a track record in dealing with social issues so they're just going with what they think will get them social media approval/more sales, but I have stopped following and buying from a lot of brands/companies as a result

mudgetastic · 25/04/2022 09:33

Which brands are badly afflicted?

On any form that asks for gender, or what I identify as, or similar, I now always tick "other" or "prefer not to say".
I'm a woman. Just that. Female born, with all my own boobs and vagina. I don't have a gender, and don't identify as anything, and will refuse to as long as I possibly can.

Panicmode1 · 25/04/2022 09:43

I think we all need to start identifying as HR Directors and CEOs, and giving ourselves massive payrises and seats on the board......😉and then perhaps these companies will start questioning what 'identifies as' really means.....

thebeespyjamas · 25/04/2022 09:50

Might be interesting to tell them that you do not identify as a woman, and ask if you can still join. See what they say?

RoaringtoLangClegintheDark · 25/04/2022 09:53

Why? Just why?

Because they’ve been captured? They’re virtue signalling? They’ve swallowed the outrageous male-primacy based propaganda that so-called gender identity overrides biological sex? They’re in denial about the reality of sex based oppression/disadvantage, and the need for single sex initiatives? They’ve got some woke libefems on board who are cheering this on?

tresleches‘ insight is interesting.

TopKnotch · 25/04/2022 10:00

Interestingly, I've had a dig around on one of the conpanies' web pages and it's an outfit set up by 2 women. One of whom holds a record for all-female team canoeing title. Surely, they understand what this all means?!

RoaringtoLangClegintheDark · 25/04/2022 10:25

Maybe they’re just scared of the consequences if they don’t go along with the orthodoxy?

Or it may be that they fall within that group of sportswomen/female athletes who actively do support male people appropriating women’s sport. It’s sad.

Female socialisation has a lot to answer for, at any rate. Be kind (to the men).

IamSarah · 25/04/2022 10:27

Tell me about it. It's happening everywhere including female only rape crisis groups.

See attached from Brighton's rape crisis centre.

@IamSarah that is ridiculous!

The consequences for women failing to recite the trans mantras are severe. Your business, your family and your safety can all be attacked by the extremists. Hopefully this is starting to change ...
