'Teenage girls sleep and exercise less than boys, and are three times as likely to report struggling with their mental health, a study suggests.'

This is so heartbreaking.

'Teenage girls sleep and exercise less than boys, and are three times as likely to report struggling with their mental health, a study suggests.'

Quote from a teenage girl interviewed:

'"I think a lot of it today is about looking good for other people, being who other people expect you to be - the perfect girl. Especially today when lots of people are questioning who they are, and their identity."'

I think girls need feminism now more than ever.

I think this might go some way towards explaining the explosion in numbers of girls identifying as boys, to escape this pressure from social media for perfect grooming, fashion, etc.
Not to mention the influence of porn on teen boys, who now think it normal to strangle, spit on and anally rape their girlfriends. What girl would want to accept that - no wonder their mental health is suffering.

Are boys not reporting it because of pressures on them to "toughten up" etc. I don't see one as being any better than the other really.

I seem to remember that suicide rates for adolescent boys was higher than for girls, not sure if it is still the case.

Yes, Babdoc, I expect it may well be part of it.

ancientgran, that issue is mentioned in the article. Suicide is obviously a complex issue and thankfully extremely rare in this age group particularly, but the rate comparison is extra difficult to assess due to various factors such as methods used.

I don't actually know that comparing suicide rates is even all that helpful when discussing mental health among young people.
