Honestly what an idiot.

I saw this yesterday - interview in the Times. Am disappointed as from what little I knew of him I took him to be one of the good guys.

Jack: you don't know a trans child. There's no such thing.

TheGreatATuin · 16/02/2022 15:04

Wow, that's patronising.

Igneococcus · 16/02/2022 15:24

What is stopping him?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 16/02/2022 15:26

Talk about bias in the article - no explanation of GC feminism at all.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/02/2022 15:31

So why can’t they? Oh right I know why because Jack is brave as brave can he talking to an interviewer but wouldn’t have the nerve to say any of this direct to JKR face

SwissBall · 16/02/2022 15:32

All these men who want a “discussion”. So patronising! They obviously think they’re smarter, more well-informed and so much more charitable and compassionate than her. Also what they really mean is they want is for her to be “re-educated” - to parrot what they say and ideally shut up. How she doesn’t tell them all to FTFOAWYGTFOSM I don’t know. It’s not a million miles from Crispin Blunt trying to school Lisa Townsend imo.

Exactly this.

They don't want a discussion, they want the opportunity to tell a woman why she's wrong and, as you say, to instruct her in the depraved or ignorant depths of her need for re-education.

IvyTwines · 16/02/2022 15:56

Thorne says he knows the Potter books "attract vulnerable readers". Yes, vulnerable. That's precisely why Rowling spoke up.

IvyTwines · 16/02/2022 15:59

She remembers what it's like to be a teenage girl, Jack. You don't, and can't, EVER.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/02/2022 15:59

How she doesn’t tell them all to FTFOAWYGTFOSM I don’t know.

Perhaps she did and that's why he didn't get to have his "discussion"! Grin

IntermittentParps · 16/02/2022 16:31

It is striking that the article ends with the Mermaids letter quote: 'To address the core of your point, trans rights do not come at the expense of women’s rights,” it read.'
With no counter-remark or background.
I wonder: did Rowling just ignore his letter? I mean, I have to assume they have not had this 'discussion' he says he wants. I'd like to know how that went. Did he ring her up when she didn't respond to his letter and she wouldn't answer? DID they talk, and she put out her point of view, and he still didn't agree, so he still considers that they haven't had a discussion?

SwissBall · 16/02/2022 16:51

Good point Eresh! Grin

It’d be interesting to know Intermittent. I can’t remember who this was but when she made her first big statement I remember there was much wailing about the fact that they’d offered Gendered Intelligence and others to re-educate speak with JKR and she’d declined the kind offer iirc.

aliasundercover · 16/02/2022 17:19

No doubt the interviewers pressed him hard to say something controversial.
I think he was ok. Obviously I disagree with him, but he didn’t say anything rude or judgemental about JKR - in fact he went out of his way to say good things about her. Compare his words to those of the talentless little shits who starred in the movies.

ANameChangeAgain · 16/02/2022 17:21

I got as far as him telling us he has a trans friend, so knows all about it. I gave the biggest eyeroll and now I have a migraine.

He's not rude, no, but it's quite patronising what he says.

Christ, really? How very Cultural Revolution.

Rodedooda · 16/02/2022 17:41

I saw this on msn? (Work browser defaults to click bait news!) and overwhelmingly the comments were in favour of JKR's position Grin

TheMarzipanDildo · 16/02/2022 18:33

Very patronising.

I’m all for debate and ‘discussion’ though (less so ‘re-education’!), because let’s be honest, we have all the arguments.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/02/2022 18:43

To address the core of your point, trans rights do not come at the expense of women’s rights,”

So he didn't actually address it, did he, he merely parroted a thought terminating cliche he'd heard TRAs say. JKR or any of us could refute it within seconds.

SunniDelite · 16/02/2022 19:26

They never say what JKR actually said, do they? How can a woman's insistence that people who menstruate used to be called women (in slightly different terms) possibly be harmful to a "trans" child? Now the NHS can't even say that it is WOMEN, not "people" who need cervical smears. Who is being made to feel "unsafe" by women asserting their biology? What sex was (or is) Jack Thorne's mother? What sex was everybody's mother from the beginning of the human race? This madness makes me want to scream and bang my head against the wall.... :0

zanahoria · 16/02/2022 20:18

So why cannot Jack explain exactly where he thought JKR was wrong?

TheMarzipanDildo · 17/02/2022 17:01

Yeah and the Bible is the supreme authority on everything because that’s what it says in the Bible.

I can’t comprehend the lack of critical thinking skills it must take to come out with a line like “trans rights do not come at the expense of women’s rights”. I’ve seen plenty of evidence that certain “trans rights” do negatively affect women’s rights. It would be pretty bloody hard to demonstrate that there is no such relationship between the two AT ALL.
