I know it's more of the same, but I'm so saddened to see another 'journalist' jump on the bandwagon and give Jo a kicking.

She is simultaneously accused of wading in to a complex issue via tweets where a PhD would be more appropriate, and then apparently her letter wasn't nuanced enough. So it's fine that those criticising don't even respond to her actual words? She has to be perfectly nuanced, while they rant, rave and lie. Women, tired of not being listened to? Apparently it's because we don't express ourselves properly! Who knew?Hmm

Oh and as a white c*s woman apparently she shouldn't really have a view. On what - women's rights? Domestic violence? But it's ok for males to have views on who we are and what we are allowed to have.

I cant help being struck by how it is that a woman's mere words attract more censure than men's actual actions. Why do, eg convicted sex offenders not even attract the same levels of criticism? I have to conclude that's it's because society hates an 'uppity' woman who has an opinion, expresses it, and won't back down. Dear Jo, this is the very reason why we need you. Thank you Flowers

Well that's hardly ground breaking individualist journalism. There's belated bandwagon jumping and there's this!

The Indie long ago became a fanzine for its owner's interests and pet projects. Your mistake would be in regarding it as a newspaper, or its contents as journalism.

crunchermuncher · 30/12/2021 22:40

I think that probably describes all newspapers, realistically, doesn't it?

It's a popular publication with a big reach, and it makes me sad and frustrated to see women being silenced so openly. This latest JKR furore has highlighted to me how much society hates an opinionated woman.

Not in the way that it's true for the Indie now no, it's so blatant and often such a jarring juxtaposition of content that resembles a newspaper and the rest its owner's scrapbook. He is VERY pro-LGBTQ+ so it is pure fanzine on those topics.

Could only read start.

Which was the v frequent thing-

HP was my obsession
Love love love
Made me feel understood
Etc.

And now it's RUINED because I am unable to handle the writer having an opinion I don't agree with.

So rather than doing what most people do. Which is decide independently if can consume art given X about creator.
And do that.

It's so shocking that need to, often as an adult!, tell everybody via article on news site, how confused and upset I am.

Is that it?

CheeseMmmm · 31/12/2021 04:44

While other people have quietly considered whether can enjoy stuff created by child rapists, men who sexually abused their own daughters for years, misogynists, creeps, etc etc.

I find adults doing this. Immature, self centred, unable to understand that other people (just famous people?) are PEOPLE and people are complex. That life isn't good/bad and that's that.
And the big question. If a woman you admired so much, who created characters and books that spoke to you, gripped you, helped you, made your life better. Then why not have a think about what she's saying, think about her words. And then decide if she's a baddie through and through.

God I hate the word 'nuanced' or at least a common application of it.

It appears to mean: 'i have a different opinion to you on this and I have clearly thought more about this, therefore I am right.... I cannot articulate what makes me right but you are clearly a bit basic dear and not as considered as me, so do pop along.'

StopStartStop · 31/12/2021 06:20

Whinger. Couldn't be bothered reading it all.

zanahoria · 31/12/2021 07:52

It may be another just another sad Harry Potter fan moaning that their childhood has been ruined by JKR's views on women's rights but I always enjoy reading them.

Even if you don't then skip to the comments ,which are most heartening.

Another article worth clicking on for the comments

I just pop this here, "where are they now" article that manages to mention JKR only in relation to the casting of Luna:

Most of the comments are positive though, even there! And those that aren't are mostly too hyperbolic to be taken seriously.

My thoughts exactly.

Yawn.

BraveBananaBadge · 31/12/2021 08:52

The Indy is like a broken record and really will publish any old shite. Read two sentences of that just to see who they might have commissioned - didn't have to carry on after that as we all know exactly what it's going to say. Life's too short!
