With visiting 'female' artists. Whatever that means in their parlance.

Are you allowed to attend if you don’t identify as a woman, aren’t non binary but actually just are an adult human female or 🙃

Gncq · 07/12/2021 14:46

The entire workshop could be 100% people with a penis. What's the point of it then. Just let other men in too for goodness sake.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/12/2021 14:48

The age range is a bit weird. 13 yr olds Long side adults . Potentially adult males. Amd we all know what facilities non bi are males like to use.

So you have 13 year olds sharing private spaces with adult males?

No!

But how would they know? 🤔

100% very disappointed people with penises
MistandMud · 07/12/2021 14:55

Surely most 13 year olds don't call themselves women?

BoredOfSamphire · 07/12/2021 17:41

Just let other men in too

Agreed. A man/boy who wanted to attend would have a pretty good discrimination claim I think (disclaimer - not a lawyer!)

OhHolyJesus · 07/12/2021 18:09

13-18?

What are their safeguarding policies?

MarshmallowSwede · 07/12/2021 18:43

I’m a biological woman. Born female.. I don’t identify as a woman. I just AM a woman. So biological women are not welcome? This is for those who identify as women. I would interpret this as a trans women’s music group. The language muddles. English isn’t my native language but I speak it fluently enough to know that if you say identify as in front of women then you don’t mean natal women.

WineAway · 07/12/2021 18:48

Surely 13 to 17 year olds are still children? Not women?

Blog: Sage Gateshead’s Turn Up the Quiet: Young Women’s Music-Making | Sage Gateshead

This blog gives a bit more information.
I think it is meant for girls on the grounds that the music industry is being dominated by men.

If so, it is ironic that they are simultaneously apparently encouraging males.

who identify as women or non-binary aged

There will also be a series of masterclasses during which visiting female artists

🤷🏼‍♀️

ScrollingLeaves · 07/12/2021 19:10

The blog says,

“Hannah Taylor, Programme Leader for Gender Equality, added to the chat: “It’s no secret that we’re in a male-dominated industry and it’s great for young girls to be themselves in an environment where they feel safe, gain the confidence they need, gain musical skills, raise their aspirations and hopefully feel like it may be something they want to continue with in the future.

All abilities are welcome, anyone can take part. My advice is just turn up! We will welcome you into the group and hope you’ll leave feeling happier and inspired.”

So are they operating at cross purposes with themselves?

toomanytrees · 07/12/2021 20:51

The cognitive dissonance is astounding. Because the music industry is male dominated they offer a program for girls. Then they include "non binary", which can include boys. This is just bait and switch.

If this is what is on offer for girls, they might as well join a program with boys in it. At least they will know what to expect.

Rightsraptor · 07/12/2021 21:02

Women are over 18. If you're under 18 you're a girl.

What sort of person encourages children into activities that are for adults? (And I'm not talking about the course they are offering).

Now let's have a think ...

PermanentTemporary · 07/12/2021 21:57

Excluding transmen? Hope not.

PaleGreenGhost · 08/12/2021 11:07

Oh this is typical of the indie music scene. I'm in a group for "women" musicians. Sooo inclusive, by which I mean they exclude transmen and any women who don't toe the TWAW line, but males are permitted providing they wear eyeliner. They were tearing themselves to pieces trying to process what removing the "female artist" music category award means. They deep down know, but obviously can't express, that it represents a problem! I've been quite amused with the justifications some are coming up with. One even suggested that if women were "more confident in their own abilities" they would do equally well in a gender neutral category. 🤦🏻‍♀️

And yet they joined a woman's group 🙄 But not because they need to be more confident in their own abilities.... 🙃😀😂🤣
sharksarecool · 09/12/2021 20:36

Can would-be participants also self-identify as a 13-18 year old?

RobotValkyrie · 09/12/2021 21:36

Is this actually legal?
The Equality Act allows for single sex exemptions, not single gender exemptions?
