A global poll has been sent to La Leche League Leaders and applicants which proposes to remove the words Woman and Breastfeeding (as well as Art) from The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, first published in 1956.

The survey states:
The WAB 9th edition Task Force has been asked by the LLLI Board to make a recommendation regarding whether the title of the book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding should change or not in the next edition.

Then goes on to ask:
If the title is changed, how would you feel about the word 'womanly' being removed?

Please explain your response to the question above (removing 'womanly').

FFS🙄

GrrrlPwr · 24/11/2021 21:35

Well that would be a book about art then. But it's not. And they go poof and disappear in puff of magical thinking.

They want to remove the word “art” too…

DeadoftheMoon · 24/11/2021 21:38

Fucking hell.
The world is mad.

titchy · 24/11/2021 21:39

'The Personly Craft of Chest-nourishing' doesn't have quite the same ring about it somehow...

JaniceBattersby · 24/11/2021 21:39

The Of.

Catchy.

GreyhoundG1rl · 24/11/2021 21:40

Might as well re title it "Crock of Shit", then.

KimikosNightmare · 24/11/2021 21:41

It's a terrible title. It's twee and smug although does convey the sort of unrealistic and judgemental attitudes which according to reviews on Good Reads are in the book.

"Breastfeeding Explained" or "Breastfeeding" would do just fine.

I am a Leader in Europe and have received this. I am furious. Those leading these changes are so far removed from the reality of women lives all over the world. I can see this all ending in scandal like it has for the Girl Guides.

Oh, what a relief! So many people were utterly at sea as to what the term "Breastfeeding" could possibly mean. Not.

OvaHere · 24/11/2021 21:49

It is a bit of a naff title, probably of it's time if first published in the 50's.

However if they are planning to change it to The Manly Logistics of Chestfeeding or something equally stupid then no, they should just leave it alone,

EllieSattler · 24/11/2021 21:51

They'll need to re write the whole book, because it is incredibly heavy, indeed dogmatic*, on the unique mother-baby dyad,.how the mother has a special biological bond with the baby and how breastfeeding is a part of that. I have no idea how they can remove mothers and breastfeeding from it. It will be an entirely different book.

(*Once you get beyond the dogma its a very useful guide to breastfeeding)

GrrrlPwr · 24/11/2021 21:53

I think the only response every single respondent should give is 'why'.

Who is necessitating this title change?

moimichme · 24/11/2021 21:53

I think we know who. It won't be women.
BishyBarnyBee · 24/11/2021 21:54

It's an awful title.

Haven't LLL been lost for a while? Supporting transwomen who want to breastfeed Confused
(I know the boots on the ground still do great work)

I am sure that's on the cards
Szyz2020 · 24/11/2021 22:00

I like The of very much but assuming they discard unneeded any the or of, and depending on how pleased or displeased respondents are with the words they could end up with:
The Womanly Art
Womanly Breastfeeding
Womanly
Art
The Art of Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding
Womanly Breastfeeding

MsGoodenough · 24/11/2021 22:16

The title is horrific anyway. I remember throwing my copy across the room in a rage then ripping it up in despair. If I only I could have identified out of being the one with the boobs.

OperationDessertStorm · 24/11/2021 22:17

What is the fucking rush? Of all the things to focus on mid pandemic, with midwives striking and women out of work they have honed in on removing all sex based language from the most sex based activity known to woman.

(And they can shove their hippy rubbish about baby finding their own way to the nipple. Mine had to be clamped on like a power tool).

No reason at all to lose the word breastfeeding from a breastfeeding help book, though.
