The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) released a position statement in which it no longer presents "gender-affirming" hormonal and surgical interventions as the preferred treatment for gender dysphoria in youth. /1

Released in August.

They have made mention of new studies that are due out. I am looking forward to reading them.

This is good news.

The timing is interesting. It may have been mentioned before that there is currently a bill before the NZ parliament banning conversion therapy. However, conversion therapy has been defined in the bill to exclude "assisting an individual who is undergoing, or considering undergoing, a gender transition", meaning a psychiatrist or other professional has some protection.

Cl 5 of the Bill

There is also a Bill before Parliament that if enacted will allow a person to apply to change their "nominated sex", which is defined to include "the sex or gender identity that is specified in an application". This is problematic to say the least. Gender ID issues aren't really in middle NZ's radar.

Isn't detransitioning going to need to go in there too?

This is interesting. Presumably this does not include the psychiatrists currently working at the gender clinic in Auckland?

I guess that would also be a transition, just in the other direction.

One of the answers to that tweet makes it seem not as hopeful as it seems:

Can you show me where in RANZCP's statement they actually say "gender-affirming hormonal and surgical interventions" is no longer a preferred treatment? I can't find it.

It appears you have misrepresented the statement for your own agenda.

About the legislation again, the scope of the protection is quite limited. It will apply where a person seeks help in relation to their gender identity, e.g. they want to transition one way or the other. It won't apply where a trans person (or anyone else for that matter) seeks help for any other reason. The health practitioner would potentially be on a sticky wicket if they said, for example, "have you considered your gender identity in all this" in that second context.
