NHS trusts face Stonewall scrutiny on LGBT inclusion

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/10/30/stonewall-judge-nhs-lgbt-inclusion/

"40 NHS trusts may be assessed by Stonewall on their LGBT inclusion in a £220,000 taxpayer-funded project, the Sunday Telegraph has learned".

"The trusts can sign up to be benchmarked after NHS England awarded the contract, titled NHS Rainbow Badges to 5 LGBT groups. Trusts will be given bronze, silver or gold awards depending on their "inclusive cultures" and "trans status monitoring" with assessors hired on a higher starting salary than nurses. A leading role will be played by Stonewall......." etc.etc. blah blah.

A Stonewall spokesperson is quoted: "We're proud to support the NHS Rainbow Badges programme to ensure that all lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer people have access to accessible and inclusive health services, and are free to be themselves."

So does "free to be themselves" indicate we can still expect be-penised ladies in female wards even though hospitals are to be given new guidance by the equalities regulator on preserving single sex wards?

All to be paid for by us mugs, aka tax payers.

So the discredited Stonewall still has its nose in the trough despite many high-profile organisations and government departments withdrawing from its diversity scheme.

How about hiring some more nurses instead?

aliasundercover · 31/10/2021 12:02

assessors hired on a higher starting salary than nurses

!!!
Doesn't that tell us everything we need to know? Getting people healthy is second to validating fictional identities.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/10/2021 12:04

How about embedding basic equality into an hierarchical organisation where the staff (usually nursing and admin) continue to afford men the courtesy of a title but not women. Outpatient clinic after outpatient clinic where men are called in as Mr John Smith and women as Jane Brown. Add in the number of Dr's who introduce themselves as Mr Jones/Dr Smith etc, yet assume they may use the patient first name.

There's a great deal to do re basic courtesy and equality for the vast majority of the public before investing in something backed by Stonewall. How about they focus on getting the basics right first.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 31/10/2021 12:08

What PumpkinGin said.

KittenKong · 31/10/2021 12:10

How can this be stopped in its tracks. Who signed it off - who approved the budget, who suggested it in the first place (sack them all).

OvaHere · 31/10/2021 12:11

This seems more of a pressing issue. Women and babies could die as a result.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/childbirth/4388991-Midwifery-staffing-crisis

It all smacks of fiddling whilst Rome burns.

KittenKong · 31/10/2021 12:13

It’s easier to rainbow wash something that actually address the cause.

Rainbows are so much prettier that critically ill babies, or elderly patients suffering, or a&e wards on their knees. No just get a tin of rainbow paint and it will all be better.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 31/10/2021 12:30

Just think what they could do with the money if the NHS wasn't captured by Stonewall.?

Rightsraptor · 31/10/2021 12:30

It's behind a paywall so I can't read it but surely this isn't new? No NHS should dare to get embroiled with Stonewall now. They're even more stupid than I thought if they do. It's our money and we should all do our best to stop this nonsense.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/10/2021 12:48

I've read it. The salaries are one on about £28,500 and one on 30,000 and the 220 appears to be across 40 Trusts. Whilst it irks me to say it, this is probably about management doing something to appease the unions within the NHS rather than a purposeful diversion of funds from care. £220k is a minute percentage of the overall budget for 40 Trusts and possibly dampens down a great deal of other nonsense and provides positive evidence in relation to diversity claims brought by a very small number of staff against the Trusts.

Pinkfairylights · 31/10/2021 13:07

Good.

I work at a large charity that works alongside the NHS and we have also been stonewalled. Donors' money is going to pay for this bullshit when it could be spent on our beneficiaries.

Artichokeleaves · 31/10/2021 13:12

Hang on a minute, this is a highly contentious controversial group where the issues of this being a political lobby who openly

  • misrepresent the law
  • ignore, teach and reward subordination of the other 8 protected characteristics in the Equality Act
  • are biased against and intentionally mislead against the equality, rights and access of women and reward acting against women's equal best interests or hearing their concerns
  • have questionable attitudes towards safeguarding
  • have obviously highly contentious attitudes towards LGB people which many LGB people perceive as actively homophobic

And they are going to scrutinise and judge on how well the NHS as an impartial group with a duty of equality and public service to all are serving their partisan, exclusionary and highly political agenda?

Who the actual fuck signed off on this?! Is the government mad?

Motorina · 31/10/2021 18:51

Outpatient clinic after outpatient clinic where men are called in as Mr John Smith and women as Jane Brown.

Don't get me started. Our patient management software defaults to this in letters. Every single letter I send about a female patient I manually edit to 'Ms Jones' unless my patient has either put a different title on the form or mentions they're married.

(I used to ask, "Do you prefer Miss, Ms or Mrs?" until a patient complained I was asking a personal question. So now everyone's a Ms until proven otherwise.)

twelly · 31/10/2021 18:57

An appalling waste of money - the NHS needs health care professionals. This is not what should going on and just shows how messed up society is when this is seen as a priority.

Grumpyosaurus · 31/10/2021 19:18

Fucking hell - how did Stonewall get to be judge, jury and executioner like this?

And as PP have said, what an insane waste of money.

I presume that is the direct cost for the 5 LGBT groups?

Each Trust would have to allocate time and staff to roll the benchmarked award winning culture across the organisation.
Each Trust will have a number of locations too so thats a indirect hidden cost and opportunity cost for other projects.

Add in the KPI culture can lead to target fixation to the detriment of other service user needs.

Was it not Brighton Trust who documented that staff to lie to female patients who recognised when men were placed on a female ward and were racist in comparing such a male to a Black Woman?

I’ve seen that Baroness Nicholson is going to organise an open letter.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/10/2021 20:21

Wasn't it one of those "rainbow badge groups" who had to delete a tweet where they called women terfs?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/10/2021 20:25

Yes it was

https://twitter.com/MForstater/status/1444970057751306241?s=20

A TRA asked if "the terf responsible had been fired" for a complaint made about the scheme mentioned by the Rainbow Badges account.

They replied "it's an understandable but incorrect assumption that a terf was responsible"

Confused

Add in the number of Dr's who introduce themselves as Mr Jones/Dr Smith etc, yet assume they may use the patient first name.

LOL.
I remember a consultant gynaecologist introducing himself as Mr and proceeding to call the patient Susan. She said "If you're Mr X you can call me Mrs Y". Grin

KittenKong · 31/10/2021 20:29

That was the whole effing point of the ‘my name is’ bloody badges! So your patients could see your name (and feel comfortable) - not so you can push your bloody pronoun/shoe size/star sign on them!

That’s it.
Pyewackect · 31/10/2021 21:08

Who’s got time for this shit ? . It’s hard enough keeping the patients alive ! We desperately need more staff. Spend it on that.

littlbrowndog · 31/10/2021 21:12

Well yeah. Spend the money on staff and patients not some wee project stonewall the lobby group has said you have to,spend the money

Don’t appease stonewall

Piapiano · 31/10/2021 21:12

Such a total waste of money. Its scandalous. This is not what the NHS should be spending money on when people are needlessly dying due to lack of appointments/clinics/delayed screening and surgery. What can we do to raise awareness of this/complain?
