As ‘but what about intersex?’ comes up a lot, I thought I’d share this

Yes, a good read. I have shared it about a bit.

@ClareCAIS

I often read your tweets and I appreciate the time and effort that you take to discuss these issues.

May I ask if VSD is a term to that is used as well? I have often seen it used on twitter and I am interested if it is an accepted term as well.

Thank you again for all that you do.

Helleofabore · 27/10/2021 20:56

Oops, I have, of course, noticed you use it in your article too.

I will rephrase my question, is it equally accepted please?

It's a really strong piece, thank you for taking the time to set it all down so clearly. In my workplace, the EDI information is shocking in that describes intersex people as neither male nor female, but as some of other sex. I have challenged it before and will do so again and I will definitely refer them to this article.

Helleofabore · 27/10/2021 21:15

that does make sense ClareCAIS. I did wonder.

thank you

Soontobe60 · 27/10/2021 21:29

I knew some basic details about DSD as I’ve researched it as part of my job, but this article has opened my eyes wide. I was very aware of TRAs self identifying as ‘intersex’, and the term being used as a ‘gotcha’ in the sex isn’t binary nonsense, but bloody hell, this pulls no punches.
An excellent piece that everyone who thinks they know about DSD should read - more than once!

Thank you for sharing.

@ClareCAIS

Thanks for sharing and this is very much just the tip of the iceberg - ‘intersex’ academia is one big mess of bad science & dodgy statistics & very much a funding grab, with a small group peer reviewing each other’s papers
I was profoundly irritated at what this does to funding research or even beginning to understand the natural history and needs of people with a confirmed diagnosis.

This is what happens when self-diagnosis, self-id and advocacy get in the way of appropriate data collection and a shared dedication to understanding the science.

I so appreciate your writing, ClareCAIS. I have learned so much from you and your thoughts have shaped mine.

This should be essential reading for anyone dipping their toe into this debate. I need to read it again.
