Lisa Littman: research into 100 detransitioners

Just spotted this on Twitter:

link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10508-021-02163-w.pdf

I'm not skilled enough to understand all its ramifications but a 5-minute scan of it makes it clear that the women who transitioned were experiencing a very different range of issues when compared with the men.

I know I shouldn't, but I'm bumping this because I think it could be important.

Sixty-nine percent of the 100 participants were natal female and 31.0% were natal male. Reasons for detransitioning were varied and included: experiencing discrimination (23.0%); becoming more comfortable identifying as their natal sex (60.0%); having concerns about potential medical complications from transitioning (49.0%); and coming to the view that their gender dysphoria was caused by something specific such as trauma, abuse, or a mental health condition (38.0%). Homophobia or difficulty accepting themselves as lesbian, gay, or bisexual was expressed by 23.0% as a reason for transition and subsequent detransition. The majority (55.0%) felt that they did not receive an adequate evaluation from a doctor or mental health professional before starting transition and only 24.0% of respondents informed their clinicians that they had detransitioned.

It's good that proper research is beginning on this.

I'm reading it more slowly now. It really does seem to reflect an awful lot of the observations and concerns that have been expressed here over the years.

DisappearingGirl · 19/10/2021 22:55

That's an interesting piece of research.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 19/10/2021 23:15

This is brave of Littman after the reaction to the ROGD paper.

Thanks for highlighting this, OP .

NotBadConsidering · 19/10/2021 23:50

Really important, thanks for flagging

1Week · 19/10/2021 23:53

Fair play to Littman, she has put up with a lot.

SecondRateFrog · 20/10/2021 00:02

So does she do her research independently of any university or other body? Universities don't seem to be prepared to allow their academics to research this. It was Bath Spa which specifically refused to allow it, wasn't it?

Ambersand · 20/10/2021 01:04

Bath Spa was James caspian. Littman was Brown University. This study is groundbreaking, first of its kind

EdinburghFeminist · 20/10/2021 07:31

Thanks for sharing OP

Lisa Littman thank you. and it's good to see people including detranstioners thanking her for her great work:

She's shining a light on what's happening to young lesbians:

“Several natal females [said] that seeing other butch lesbians would have helped them...“What would have helped me is being able to access women’s community, specifically lesbian community. I needed access to diverse female role-models and mentors, especially other butch women.” 😭

YetAnotherSpartacus · 20/10/2021 10:02

I echo the weeping.

They. so. fucked. over. lesbians.

Shedbuilder · 20/10/2021 10:32

And of course the lesbian community is now divided into the Diva-fronted pro-trans, under 30s, whip-your-tits-off/ shag-a-transbian glittery fun public face of lesbian life, which is what young women see every day, and the invisible, underground, by-invitation-only lesbian community, mostly 40+ and mostly second wave feminists, who are still around but trying not to be noticed as we gather in our practical fleeces and walking boots with our suspiciously short hair.

Maybe we need to work harder on butch lesbian visibility. Butch pin-up of the month, anyone? I nominate Leanne.

I read the whole thing this morning. It is excellent, and a vital piece of the bigger picture.

I remember when K.d. Lang was pretty much this.

For a tiny little while, it was cool to be a lesbian.

SpindelWhorl · 20/10/2021 12:04

k d lang gladdened my heart as a confused young woman. She made everything seem ok when she sang Constant Craving.
