Radio 4 Woman’s Hour - single sex provision

Part of equal pay discussion. Head of EHRC calming talking about Equality act and exemptions for single sex provision. Emma Barnet kept asking ‘ why now, who is asking about this.?’ She (Emma ) sounded nervous but I felt a bit hostile.

Is this on today, Jelly?

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 19/10/2021 10:39

Do you think this might be like Misha Husain on Today with Nolan and Thompson? That EB has to to be heard to give this topic a thorough scrutiny because it is so controversial to some?

Reptar · 19/10/2021 10:41

Emma Barnet kept asking ‘ why now, who is asking about this?
I could think of more relevant questions to ask the EHRC, given the chance to speak to them. Confused

I posted this on the EHRC thread:

Baroness Falkner was just on Woman's Hour, round about the 25 minutes point talking about this:

As this tweet says, the message she's coming out with is that the single sex exceptions need to be applied, simply letting institutions decide what to do is proving to be insufficient.

nauticant · 19/10/2021 10:43

Maybe I misheard, but it seemed to me that EB was pushing Baroness Falkner to acknowledge the conflict that's raging and BF demurred, probably rightly, in a politician kind of way.

It was.

Nauticant - that's how I heard it too.

nauticant · 19/10/2021 10:50

BF wasn't invited on to talk about single-sex provision but rather to talk about unequal treatment in the workplace and EB used the opportunity to ambush BF on the single-sex issue. It was interesting that BF did engage, cautiously, rather than go all huffy.

nauticant · 19/10/2021 10:55

I went to re-listen. Actually I thought EB dealt with this well, in a neutral but probing way, seeking to get to how BF perceives this rather than seeking to get a line to fit into a predetermined narrative.

It really is worth a listen.

ArabellaScott · 19/10/2021 11:29

'it seems to us that the law isn't being used effectively'

That's interesting. Sounds like criticism of Stonewall law, to me. And a statement of intent to sort it out. I think Baroness was pretty good, actually. Tactful, but fairly firm.

Blessex · 19/10/2021 12:29

Does anyone have a link. Above doesn’t work for me. Thanks

Mollyollydolly · 19/10/2021 13:14

Emma was trying to get her to say something outright about 'Stonewall law' and probably wisely she wouldn't. I thought it was good, although anyone not following the subject probably wouldn't have a clue what was going on ..

WarriorN · 19/10/2021 13:42

Awesome. Keep asking annoying questions Emma.

I wonder what the responses to the recent EHRC consultation showed, there's also the results from the Toilets consultation and the GRA consultation (as another thread pointed out). I'm really hoping Baroness Falkner is trying to make sure her ducks are in a row. She won't want to look like she's ignoring trans rights completely.

Reptar · 19/10/2021 19:07

@Blessex There's too many dots in the link, this one should work;

Blessex · 19/10/2021 19:22

@reptar. Thanks! Listened. Emma knows this is hugely controversial at the moment and I thought BF was good at making clear this is in law and the law is not being followed.
