Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Practical suggestions please – where can we donate time/resources to help women’s rights???

(I’ve joined Mumsnet only recently, and – whilst today’s issues of feminism and trans people and the overlap between them/degradation of one for the other dismay me – I am so GLAD to be seeing some of the posts on this forum as I really was feeling rather alone in my standpoint. Thank you for the sanity, people!)

I don’t want to throw stones at trans people, I don’t hate them because I am a feminist. They are welcome to do what they want.

I do however feel passionately about women’s rights and equality. Always have. I try and further them every day, for example by watching my pronouns and expectations etc etc.

I also currently have time and skills and even the occasional tenner and want to do something extra and constructive.

Where can I direct my efforts? Any suggestions on organisations?

I’d like a women’s rights organisation that doesn’t also further trans rights as part of their umbrella –as we know, many seem to lump them both in together.

Appreciate it’s a fluid situation, and that there are many other threads on this forum that I haven’t yet read. However thanks if anyone has any pointers.

Sex Matters, founded by Maya Forstater, Emma Hilton (and no doubt others who I'm not remembering), seems like it will be quite an effective lobbying group.

And they're occasionally asking for help on crowdsourced things like data entry.

Datafan55 · 30/09/2021 11:21

@NecessaryScene The voicepops on their home page seem promising! Will look a little more deeply. Thanks.

MurrayBlackburnMcKenzie (hope I spelled that right) might tickle your fancy if you like data. They have a crowd funder going.

Datafan55 · 30/09/2021 11:28

@SuperLoudPoppingAction The internet likes the spelling. Thanks, I'll have a look.

FILiA is a great group that helps women all over the world and doesn't just focus on the trans debate. They are always looking for volunteers and donations. There is of course the conference coming up in a few weeks which I believe many Mumsnetters will be attending.

Datafan55 · 30/09/2021 15:58

@purpleboy Excellent, I shall have a look at them too. Hadn't actually heard of them (either). I haven't actively supported anyone so it will be good to get my teeth into something and just to be an active voice.

I second Sex Matters - you can subscribe, make a one off donation and offer to volunteer.
sex-matters.org/

Keep Prisons Single Sex - they have useful wording so you can write to your MP, and will provide support if you want to follow this up with a meeting. They also sell mugs/bags etc to support their work.

I think the Femicide Census/Counting Dead Women work is vital. www.femicidecensus.org

Keira Bell has vowed to keep fighting so I will be supporting her with that, her crowdfunders are on Crowd Justice

TooWicked · 30/09/2021 17:16

I’ve stopped all of my previous charity direct debits and cancelled most of my media subscriptions (though I am considering re-subscribing to The Times).

Since doing that I’ve donated to a number of crowd funding causes that pop up on here, joined the Green Party to vote for Shahrar Ali, bought 2 copies of Trans through Sex Matters to be sent to 2 MP’s, I’ve bought t-shirts, a mug and loads of stickers from Standing For Women/Posie Parker, donated to Fair Play For Women’s legal challenge of the census, I’ve been ribboning, bought Graham Linehan a couple of coffees through his Patreon…

After Christmas I’ll start having a proper look for some new charities to make a regular donation to, but I’ll want to make sure they are absolutely certain that they know what a woman is.

Dinosaurwoman · 30/09/2021 17:41

I donate regularly to SexMatters and occasionally to Woman’s Aid . I’ve joined the Green Party and will stay a member if Ali gets in as he knows what a woman is. I’ve cancelled my Lib Dem and Oxfam direct debit because they don’t know what a woman is.

Datafan55 · 30/09/2021 17:45

Thanks, @EmbarrassingAdmissions - I'll have a look at them.

@Dinosaurwoman I believe that woman's aid are full on twaw

Datafan55 · 30/09/2021 18:01

@TooWicked @Dinosaurwoman I only saw that thread about the Green guy today - too late to join to vote, unfortunately - curious to see what the outcome will be.

I am learning who to 'align' myself with - eg JKRowling but not half the HPotter cast, I'm following everything re Rosie Duffield. Had no idea about Graham Linehan but will stream any old programmes of his I can find in tacit support.

I’ve stopped all of my previous charity direct debits and cancelled most of my media subscriptions - it's a sad state of things that we have to withdraw support from organisations jumping on a band wagon, and I have been surprised to find that organisations I thought would be good are not (eg the recent Christian Aid survey re gender equality; it sneaks in trans rights - I felt very ambushed).

However very glad to see there's things we can do and/or that there are people reacting.

Transgender Trend
Safe Schools Alliance
Sex Matters
Women’s Place
LGB Alliance (standing up for eg teenage lesbians to not be targeted with hate calling them transphobic for not wanting to sleep with biological males)

@Skysblue I'll have a look and see if I can find a fit, ta

Great thread.

ElizaDarcysDeeds · 30/09/2021 18:29

I'm confused. Why are you watching your pronouns? Confused

SpindleWorld · 30/09/2021 18:33

I do some things quietly, behind the scenes, with old contacts from previous jobs. This can be putting people in touch with each other, offering 'political' advice, or doing some pro bono research for a colleague or former colleague who's swamped.

You could donate copies of books like Helen Joyce's to local libraries.

Yeah, fuck pronouns. Compelled, intrusive speech emblematic of the whole Genderwoo.

Slightly related but I watched BBC drama Three Families last night and I was going to start a thread asking if anyone knew of charities (either in England or NI) specifically to help women from NI with the practicalities and financial burden of accessing abortions.

Datafan55 · 30/09/2021 18:49

@ElizaDarcysDeeds @SpindleWorld
Pronouns - I meant with regards to someone mentioning a doctor or engineer, not saying 'did he ...?' With regards to someone mentioning a nurse or hairdresser, not saying 'did she...?'
However changed things are superficially, so many people have those deeply ingrained attitudes of what genders can do, and even worse mention them naturally in front of little kids.

Same principle of not talking about football/girls football, the tennis/the women's tennis. Same principle of streaming eg all games of women's football to make the point that the demand/support is there and that tv should show it (more) (thus the country supports it more).

(before injury) I used to work in data analysis. These days I belong to a group in my town and make a point of doing the tech support instead of helping with the kids' clubs. I love both tech and kids, and we all know that supervising kids takes definite skills, but it's good to drive the point home that women can do things like as projection/sounddesks.

etc etc etc - sure we all have things we do
