Lammy… again!

Apparently an adult male can get a cervix through hormones and surgery!

Who knew?

I’m equally embarrassed for him and bloody livid that this moron is in government.

Lammy's not in government, thank god. Or not technically in government, the fact Labour are taking up the space where an opposition should be is another matter.

Akire · 29/09/2021 10:07

I woke up to him on LBC shocking that a senior well educated person can say such rubbish. Surely someone needs have a word and explain what a cervix is. It’s not just the dead end of a vagina !

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 29/09/2021 10:08

Labour are taking up the space where an opposition should be

Exactly right. They are a dying party - deservedly so.

1Endeavour2 · 29/09/2021 10:10

Discussion in parliament, what discussion?

PiglingBlonde · 29/09/2021 10:10

Lanny also had the 'brilliant' idea yesterday that city solicitors should each give 35 free hours to help get rape convictions up.

I'm all in favour of a windfall tax on city firm profits which would be used to support legal aid firms but Lammy's idea is completely ridiculous:

  1. very few city solicitors do criminal work and when they do it is corporate or regulatory (much of which doesn't go to court). A mergers and acquisitions specialist is going to be less than useless on a criminal trial;

  2. 35 hours across the year will not provide continuity of support so potentially victims having to tell their story over and over again with no progress;

  3. criminal law is a vital part of a functioning legal system which should be properly funded, not passed over to rich kids on holiday.

Someone needs to give all of these politicians a crash course in anatomy and brief them as to exactly what happens when someone undergoes a surgical transition, and what organs they acquire/lose during the procedure. It’s embarrassing. And why don’t the broadcasters and writers get a properly qualified medic on to explain it (and correct folk when they go off piste)?

FFS

Imnobody4 · 29/09/2021 10:19

Wow just wow. Isn't it just amazing how it's always transwomen that are the default never transmen. Thinking about that it isn't really, just a different take on the default male.
David there is no hiding place from that.

Doglicks · 29/09/2021 10:21

I went to school with him. He peddles this "born and brought up on the mean streets of Tottenham" nonsense, but he was actually a full boarder at The Kings Cathedral School in Peterborough, and was a chorister in the Cathedral choir. I have a cassette tape of him singing "Old Father Time" in a high soprano solo, from a school play in 1985. Barely went home apart from 3 times a year for 7 years. Then off to Oxford and then Harvard. When exactly was he down living the rough life in the ghetto, that he bases his politics on?

(Sorry that was just an aside from your thread) :-)

eurochick · 29/09/2021 10:22

On the law firm bit the post above is spot on. We are not for the most part criminal lawyers. The skill set is wrong. And most firms already do a fair bit of pro Bono work, supporting law clinics for people representing themselves in the civil courts because legal aid was taken away.

endofagain · 29/09/2021 10:23

It comes back to the same point about the changing language on screening publicity. If a highly privileged, educated man has no clue what a cervix is, how can a poorly educated girl/ woman, or one who doesn't speak much English, be expected to understand that she is a
"Person with a cervix".

BaronessWrongCrowd · 29/09/2021 10:26

Jesus, Mary and the wee donkey. This is the calibre of the opposition? No wonder the Tories keep getting in.

Saltovinegar · 29/09/2021 10:30

Dear me, he's thick as mince. My cat has more intelligence.

So you’re saying your school has a good singing programme but is terrible at teaching biology?😆

Honestly, I despair about this guy. How can he be so stupid?

Gastonia · 29/09/2021 10:34

On a positive note, my recent change of name to that of a dinosaur seems to have been strangely prescient. Grin

Fitt · 29/09/2021 10:35

When asked if only women have a cervix he replies transwomen can too.

So quite clearly he does NOT consider them to be women.

He got that bit right!

So

BlackForestCake · 29/09/2021 10:36

Endofagain that's a really good point and perhaps making that point again and again would mean something positive comes out of this embarrassing gaffe.

Oh, that makes me feel a bit sorry for him.

Only briefly! Thank goodness he's here to tell us we can't have any rights because of us being dinosaurs!

Exactly. It absolutely infuriates me. By being “inclusive” we possibly exclude women with English as a second language, or those who have poor educational attainment, or have a learning disability or… like David, have zero idea what a cervix even is or if they have one.

I'm continually amazed by how low the level of anatomical/medical science knowledge in the general population is, even amongst really well educated people. I mean, I get that the finer points of embryology and genetics aren't exactly common knowledge but they aren't super complicated either if you're motivated to learn about them. If you're reasonably bright then you should be able to teach yourself at least the basics if it's something that interests you, and if you're relying heavily on that kind of information in an argument then you'd think that it would interest you. So when I hear TRAs spouting absolutely garbage about super complicated chromosomes and different DSDs and what is and is isn't achievable via SRS, stuff that is obviously false and easily disprovable, I can only conclude that one of three things is true: 1) they don't understand what they're talking about and they aren't smart enough to find out, 2) they don't understand what they're talking about and they aren't interested enough to find out, or 3) they know what they're saying is wrong and they're just flat out lying about it. Which leads me to question, which of these 3 people is David Lammy?

Ghostsintheshelf · 29/09/2021 10:44

It's just a continuation of language being hijacked. If woman can include men, and males can be female, and periods can mean the tummy upsets that men get from taking hormones, I'm sure cervix can stretch to mean the top of a neovagina - or even a toenail, if that would stop certain people getting their feelings hurt.

Cabinfever10 · 29/09/2021 10:45

And people wonder why Labour can't get elected

Please tell me this was just his random musings and not a proposed policy? The state of the Shadow Cabinet….. it breaks my heart that their incompetence is going to get us another 5 years of Tory cronyism. But seriously, if the Shadow Justice Secretary cannot see what a ridiculous idea this is (when even lay-people like me can) Labour are fucked.

Agree with @Fariha31, they just need to step the fuck away now, split up into the Momentum party and a centre-left party. As it is, the dwindling pool of talent in the party is being drowned out by the likes of Lammy, Rayner, Nandy etc who are only there to appease Momentum and stop a leadership challenge.

Kosmoceratops · 29/09/2021 10:46

Another privileged Labour Party politician (like Lisa Nandy) who consistently harks back to an imaginary deprived childhood. He has benefitted at every turn from his Guyanese heritage - scholarship to an exclusive private school, entry to SOAS and the first black Briton to study at Harvard law school.

Must have failed biology O level though.
