Utter nonsense. But as long as they all stay in male prisons I really don’t care ...apart from the energy spent, rather than ensuring violence in prisons goes down. I cannot see who this will benefit in any way

JazzyBBG · 27/09/2021 19:43

I'm sure the prisoners are having a whale of a time thinking what they can identify as...

Jaysmith71 · 27/09/2021 19:54

Where is David Challenor detained?

She/her?

We've been in the upside down for a while but ShockShockShock

WarriorN · 27/09/2021 20:02

And then you've got this going on in women's jails.

If you need a bit of light hearted "wtf?", I've spent the last ten minutes trying to get my head round this Pride event in our local paper

www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/people/dozens-of-pretty-pooches-travel-to-leeds-to-compete-in-pride-themed-furbabies-pageant-3398446?fr=operanews

"Owners competed with their dogs for prizes across six categories: best queen, king, prince, princess, lady duo and gentleman duo.

"Dogs were dressed in extravagant costumes, many hand-crafted, following the theme 'rainbow pride'.
June, 64, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "The theme was in support of Pride and the NHS, and encouraging people to show pride in anything, like what they do for work."

I can't quite articulate why my mind's so boggled, but it definitely is.

Hang on was that a spoof news article I just read - Daily Mash or Newsthump or something?

Josephine March doing excellent work in the comments and quoting Jacob Levy on Arendt and specifically expands one of my go-to quotations.

"Saying something obviously untrue, and making your subordinates repeat it with a straight face in their own voice, is a particularly startling display of power over them. It’s something that was endemic to totalitarianism. Arendt analyzed the huge lies and blatant reversals of language associated with the Holocaust. Havel documented the pervasive little lies, lies that everyone knew to be lies, of late Communism. And Orwell gave us the vivid “2+2=5.”

Being made to repeat an obvious lie makes it clear that you’re powerless; it also makes you complicit. You’re morally compromised. Your ability to stand on your own moral two feet and resist or denounce is lost. Part of this is a general tool for making people part of immoral groups. One child makes a second abuse a third. The second then can’t think he’s any better than the first, the bully, and can’t inform. In a gang or the Mafia, your first kill makes you trustworthy, because you’re now dependent on the group to keep your secrets, and can’t credibly claim to be superior to them"

Jacob Levy, Authoritarianism and Post-Truth Politics.

It breaks my heart to think of that 18 yr old giving birth alone in her cell, and her baby dying. What on earth has this country come to, that this can be allowed to happen?

Because it sounds like Best in Show and a complete misunderstanding of Pride? Grin

Just be glad that the pooches in that piece were actual canines.

The mind boggles at the damage a violent offender could do with a badge pin.

groundcontroltomontydon · 27/09/2021 21:17

It was a grey day in September and the clocks were striking thirteen

I was surprised that they weren't people!

Why is any pregnant woman in prison. If she's really dangerous then some kind of secure unit with lots of support. That case is heartbreaking and a disgrace.
