Labour's batshit opinions on women's rights

Conference season is highlighting some interesting opinions from Labour mps on women's rights (although when asked about women's rights they always turn this into a discussion on trans issues)

I thought it would be useful to collate into one thread, feel free to add.

Starmer 'Only women have a cervix' is, "Something that should not be said."

Nooo PronounssheRa
It's too depressing to see all this drivel in one place. Bet the Tories are popping open the champagne this week Sad

Gncq · 27/09/2021 21:01

It's absurd all these Labour MPs claiming to believe "we need respectful debate".

Ok well. Who is demanding "no debate" exactly, then calling women stupid slurs like "terf" and sending rape and death threats, unsolicited erection pics exactly.
It's not feminists.

If respectful debate is what's required, stop siding with the abuser.

I might vote Tory for the first time in my life. Been voting for 30 years.

Sorry Blush

I'm just baffled. As a previous labour voter and I just don't recognise them anymore.

It is really bizarre. Allegedly sane people? There is something very sinister about all of this.

THIS.

Great thread, thank you OP.

I’m another one who will be voting Tory for the first time in my voting life (25 years).

I agree there is something quite sinister going on. I have seen politicians resign for compromises that were far less personally taxing. Exactly HOW are they getting so many intelligent, forthright women (women who have had children and know the hard core reality of pushing something large through a cervix) to trot out this line? One imagines one or two would refuse and sit out on the back benches rather than compromise to this degree. But no. They'd rather look like idiots and throw women under the bus, ostensibly for their positions.

These are not women without power. Women one payment away from eviction or going hungry or having no money to top up their electricity key, women who have to keep quiet in order to survive. No. These are women with resources, networks, and impressive CVs.

I don't understand it.

Jaysmith71 · 27/09/2021 21:50

I think part of it is the trauma Labour has endured in opposition, and the lesson drawn that Unity is all, don't rock the boat, get with the programme and repeat after me.....

My dream solution would be for the Queen Mother of the Labour Party, Dame Margaret Beckett, to send them all to bed without any pudding, take over as interim leader and tell Burnham and the Right Miliband to get their arses back to Westminster for a leadership contest.

Dreams.

StandWithYou · 27/09/2021 21:51

They are finished as far as I am concerned. Watching Emily Thornberry spout so much rubbish shows me how bankrupt as a party they are, I despair at the politicians we have. Labour should be a strong opposition to a weak, reactive government with lots of issues around PPE contracts, track and trace etc but they are failing.

I agree with this as well. Well put.
bellinisurge · 27/09/2021 21:56

The debate is as it is because of No Debate. The toxicity is from one camp only unless you think talking biological reality is "literal violence " etc etc.
Labour are going to lose.

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 27/09/2021 21:57

Literally marking themselves as unelectable, stupid and dishonest. Might as well be asking them "is the sky blue" and watch them turn themselves inside explaining why it's not.
Liars, cowards and fools.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/09/2021 21:57

Someone could make a wonderful video montage of all these moments, set to comedy music.

Someone at Tory Central Office probably is.

They've been caught twice doctoring Starmer interviews to make him look shifty and two-faced. But now they don't have to edit.

About the only thing that makes sense. It has been tough as opposition through the Corbyn years, where they received daily bashing from the RW press, true... But still.......

My (Labour controlled) town is trying to pull itself out of high unemployment, high rates of teen pregnancy, very high rates of permanent exclusions from schools, high rates of male suicide, food banks, homeless people on the increase, businesses folding and low wages but yeah, the most important thing is minding who you say has a cervix.
