Labour's batshit opinions on women's rights

Conference season is highlighting some interesting opinions from Labour mps on women's rights (although when asked about women's rights they always turn this into a discussion on trans issues)

I thought it would be useful to collate into one thread, feel free to add.

Starmer 'Only women have a cervix' is, "Something that should not be said."

Angela Raynor: you can't be a Labour member if you don't believe TWAW, plus the Trans Pledge:

Just extraordinary. Can they hear themselves talking such utter nonsense?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 27/09/2021 22:40

It's so evident that they don't believe it. The staring panicked eyes, the hesitation, umming, erring, waffling. It's actually very funny (well it would be if it wasn't so depressing).

Pledging to end the epidemic of violence against women and girls on one hand but being incapable of defining what ‘women and girls’ means on the other.

I find it so bloody scary. I’m a Labour voter all my voting life and I’m absolutely ashamed for the party. Their big chance to set the record straight and they double down. For Christ’s sake. Of course Starmer and Thornberry and the rest of them know what a woman is. Everyone actually does. Absolutely everyone. Babies and animals know.
The Labour MPs reciting these mantras know that we know, they’re just being high-handed and apparently educative of everyone else to serve their own tribal loyalties and interests. And apparently women should just echo the dogma against their own interests, or fuck off and put up with the consequences of not getting on board with that. Or, they’re frightened and looking after themselves over representing their constituents. Which is not acceptable either and needs to be urgently sorted out.

The genderist MPs have chucked away their own credibility by going on public record talking such crap. The country is fucked at the moment, post Brexit and with a predicable lack of government investment, millions of people can’t even access essential goods, including petrol. We desperately need a decent opposition to hold Johnson’s government to account. Labour need to urgently stop behaving like the Tories are the natural party of government and grow up and do their job.

The Labour leader and senior Labour MPs spouting this nonsense just look like self serving, gaslighting, homophobic, anti-safeguarding, anti-science, unbelievably out of touch misogynists. They’ve given a religious response to a factual secular question and journalists and the public should be pressing them to elaborate: they need to explain how their position actually works with promoting and protecting women and children’s rights. (It doesn’t..) It’s a massive failure of those MP’s political and democratic duty to women and children.

ChattyLion · 28/09/2021 03:36

It’s shocking how anti-democratic the outcome of this political dogma is for so many women who would want to vote for, join, or volunteer for Labour. And it’s not like Labour are alone in having lots of active genderists in their party. Every party does. It’s been a mass disincentive to voting. Personally I can’t ever vote for the Tories. I don’t even know what the Lib Dems stand for now they’re advocating against female-only spaces. They used to campaign on democratic essentials like freedom of thought and speech.. Sad The Greens are all over the same sexist dogma too [google the Challoners]. We’ve had threads on here on all of this and the woeful political response to it for years now. It’s so grim. I just keep on writing to MPs (of all parties). It does make me hopeful that the issue is at least on the main news/public agenda now. Fewer MPs can get away with ignoring it.

The majority of MPs’ lack of public support for Duffield is so disappointing though when we all know that privately most MPs and the vast majority of voters agree with her. It just shows how fear of threats and violence plus personal careerism, are winning out over political principles and democratic integrity at the moment. MPs urgently need to be reminded that they will have massive public support for standing up against this toxic one-sided assault on women’s rights.

A female Labour MP has had to exclude herself from her own party conference over this one issue already. It’s awful. Where is the political leadership to support her? To support all MPs’ freedom of conscience on absolutely basic political issues, like not discriminating against women?

The Forstater case showed that holding incontrovertible factual views on this specific issue is legally protected. Everyone needs to be able to freely use the legal rights that they have, even including if they also happen to be female at the same time. Hmm Otherwise who the fuck are we as a country? a culture? a democracy? As JKR rightly said, THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

NantesElephant · 28/09/2021 03:44

My god, I want to shake them all. Labour have made themselves unelectable with this nonsense, at a point where are strong opposition is desperately needed.

FurzeMinister · 28/09/2021 04:22

Of course Starmer and Thornberry and the rest of them know what a woman is. Everyone actually does. Absolutely everyone. Babies and animals know.

And, crucially, trans people know, probably better than anyone else. Talk to anyone who has had SRS, and they will tell you that both the approving therapist and the surgeon explicitly stress that the surgery is NOT an actual sex change, that it is not possible to change sex, and what that means for the patient. And they don’t just say it as a tick box item, they make sure it sinks in and is understood.

So, for whose benefit is Labour performing this pantomime?

ohfook · 28/09/2021 04:33

@Deliriumoftheendless

My (Labour controlled) town is trying to pull itself out of high unemployment, high rates of teen pregnancy, very high rates of permanent exclusions from schools, high rates of male suicide, food banks, homeless people on the increase, businesses folding and low wages but yeah, the most important thing is minding who you say has a cervix.
No the point is for Labour to be able to do all of this nationally, they need people to vote for them so they can become a credible opposition again. This won't happen while they're alienating a load of women.
DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 28/09/2021 04:36

Don't they understand that they are lying? Gaslighting the entire country with their 'men are women' views? My local MP is Labour, but I'll have to rethink voting for her (I'm guessing she has a cervix) since Kier Starmer's nonsense.

Iwishihadariver · 28/09/2021 05:33

Yes yes and yes ChattyLion, you've said everything I want to say. Ta very much!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 28/09/2021 06:26

How can anyone vote for a party that denies biological reality and denies the lived experience of so many women?

EdgeOfACoin · 28/09/2021 06:31

I've written to my Labour MP expressing my concern about these issues and asking her to confirm that she will stand up for women's right to single-sex spaces.

I would suggest that everyone write to their MP. Make it clear that this is something that matters to women.

This is excruciating. Do they not realise none of us want to vote Tory? This would be such an easy win for them. The Tories are laughing their heads off.

ArabellaScott · 28/09/2021 07:07

It is astonishing to hear people talk such nonsense. As noted, they know it's nonsense. You can see the pained expressions, hear the stumbling over wordchoice and the gears grind as they fight cognitive dissonance. They are sweating over this catechism, before surtendering the same pat phrases that fool nobody- and I suppose a tiny part of them is also acknowledging that with every nonsense statement they are dismantling the party.

ArabellaScott · 28/09/2021 07:08

Overused the word 'nonsense' there even after deleting another two instances. Did I mention it's all nonsense?

I actually wondered yesterday whether Andy McDonald going was a smokescreen, to change the media questions to something apart from cervix/woman etc.
Possibly not but it’s an easier question to answer….

ChattyLion · 28/09/2021 08:17

It’s not even just the rot in Westminster and Holyrood MPs. They’re culpable enough but this also shows a wider issue of political climate.

Where are the trade unions (for example) taking the MPs to task for imbibing this sexist, homophobic, hyper consumeristic, individualistic, gender stereotyping enforcing and anti science agenda?
It’s a point of failure of critical thought, anti-discrimination and pro-safeguarding across multiple institutions.

How are trade unions able to be fighting sexism and homophobia against women when they can’t even say what a woman is? (They aren’t able to..) we urgently need to get institutions to do their actual, important and useful jobs.
