Conference season is highlighting some interesting opinions from Labour mps on women's rights (although when asked about women's rights they always turn this into a discussion on trans issues)

I thought it would be useful to collate into one thread, feel free to add.

Starmer 'Only women have a cervix' is, "Something that should not be said."

I wouldn't mind a chat with Alistair Campbell to find out his thoughts on this current state of affairs.

ScreamingMeMe · 28/09/2021 12:54

Alex Sobel's tweets where he says he doesn't think women should have their own spaces, and that there are no problems with "gender neutral" toilets.

Lucy Powell: trans people are among the most abused, traumatised suicidal people (link to a tweet with the clip).

I just listened to Lucy Powell MP twitter.com/fairplaywomen/status/1442371947443142656 - its interesting they can see that many trans people are very vulnerable and mentally unwell, but can't make the link that that is more often the cause than the result of a transgender identity.

The transmen I have encountered professionally are definitely among the most vulnerable in society. And transgender ideology is harming them.

PronounssheRa · 28/09/2021 15:47

The general vibe at conference

Shouts of “shame!” and boos as a Labour delegate tells the conference hall she stands with Rosie Duffield and she will defend her right to hold her views on biological sex.

So much for respectful debate and women being safe at conference

Great posts on here, thanks to chattylion in particular.
It's all so bloody odd. I'm a bit of a Tory but getting leftier as I get older, contrary to the usual path. I'd love a decent opposition to this current shitshow though Sad
I emailed my very-safe-seat Labour MP when the Sunday Times had JKR on the front page and just got the party line back about TWAW (keep on saying it Jeff, doesn't make it true)

@DoesHePlayTheFiddle

Sod the Tories,Labour and the rest. We need an adult human female political group. We can call it 'Woman'.
Oh my god, we do need this with JKR as the leader
DdraigGoch · 28/09/2021 18:58

They can't even be bothered to stick around to answer questions. Looks like even meaningless waffle is too much effort.

Janice Turner being brilliant as ever on the Red Box podcast from the conference (around the 8 min mark):

That twitter thread of quotes. All the tories have to do at the next election is shove that through every door in leaflet form. Another landslide. Such a depressing thread.

Janice was good, Matt Chorley is a bit of a knob on this issue.

How awful. The thought of Angela Rayner getting anywhere near the Labour leadership is horrifying.

Matt Chorley mightn't be the most invested in the issue Molly but to hear three adults calmly and sensibly going over the issue - and Janice speaking, given plenty chance to speak, and being heard, objectively - was such a relief.

No conflict of rights then, says Angela Rayner. That's alright then isn't it.

PronounssheRa · 29/09/2021 07:41

I'm wondering where Labour go now with this. Do they double down, ignore it and hope it goes away, or try to somehow back away from being anti women and acknowledge women have rights too which are worthy of protection

Also are Labour advisors doing their jobs but being ignored by MPs or are labour advisors really rubbish (as well as the comms team)

So many questions.

No conflict of rights then, says Angela Rayner while Labour women are having to meet in secret with private security 🙄

Lifelong Labour 🦖 dinosaur voter here.
40 years voting for Labour until 2019 GE when I knew I could no longer vote for them because of this issue.

Where I think they will go now? Half of the party will be hoping it just goes away, but the other half will double down.
The party as a whole will not change its stance on this, continuing to frame as trans rights, not women's rights.
I expect further weasel words about protecting single sex spaces but no clarification about their definition of single sex.

Sidehustle99 · 29/09/2021 07:54

But I believe Jess Phillips has done a lot of positive work to highlight the abuse of women. Not ready to throw her under a bus because of Keri. And my automatic go to would never be the Conservatives, ever. That goes agains every other principle I have and I believe in. Labour really have to do better IMO. Just because the cons aren't saying it doesn't mean they aren't thinking it. They have a very long history of whitewashing women's issues.

WeRoarSometimes · 29/09/2021 08:16

Labour has alienated some of its finest female MPs, Yvette Cooper, Margaret Beckett.
Others are being silenced after seeing the abuse and violent threats made against Rosie Duffield.

Rosena Allin-Khan (Tooting,London)
Sarah Champion (Rotherham),
Diana Johnson ( Kingston upon Hull).

Where are they? Why don't they get to speak?

I've written to my local Labour party rep about how women are being silenced with threats and have had a standard response trotted out.

Complex issues, condemn bigotry......

QuentinBunbury · 29/09/2021 08:19

I think I am going to have to abstain. I can't vote conservative due to the absolute shit show this country is in. I don't think I should have to reward them for stating basic biology.

However I can't vote Labour or lib dem either, because of this.
It ridiculous, I'm a politically engaged person, I ALWAYS vote. And I have noone to vote for

PronounssheRa · 29/09/2021 08:22

But I believe Jess Phillips has done a lot of positive work to highlight the abuse of women

She has, but she is silent on this issue. I don't believe for a second that jess doesn't understand these issues, and I understand why she is reluctant to speak out. But if MPs are afraid to speak then we are truly fucked.
