Council of Europe report on LGBTI rights

Has anyone read this any of this report - it's rather damning on attitudes within the UK. Section 52 specifically covers the state of affairs in the UK.

From the report -
In the United Kingdom, anti-trans rhetoric, arguing that sex is immutable and gender identities not valid, has also been gaining baseless and concerning credibility, at the expense of both trans people’s civil liberties and women’s and children’s rights. At the IDAHOT Forum 2021, the Minister for Equalities stated, in contradiction with international human rights standards with respect to the rights of trans people, “We do not believe in self-identification”. Such rhetoric – which denies trans identities – is being used to roll back the rights of trans and non-binary people and is contributing to growing human rights problems.

To quote someone else " they would say that wouldn't they?".

Whatsnewpussyhat · 27/09/2021 18:26

How is knowing sex is immutable causing issues with women and children's rights?

It's just a load of bollocks and emotional blackmail.

Babdoc · 27/09/2021 18:32

Au contraire - women’s and children’s rights absolutely depend on excluding male bodies, however they identify, from women’s single sex spaces.
Safeguarding is “transphobic” by definition. You cannot square this circle.

Intrigued to know what rights are being rolled back?

Jaysmith71 · 27/09/2021 18:42

Section 52 is gobsmackingly biased, and it's concerns about the need for children ('a person under 18,' according to the same CoE) to undergo medical interventions is more than a little creepy.

LizzieSiddal · 27/09/2021 18:44

They can fuck right off!

AnyOldPrion · 27/09/2021 18:50

The damn is breaking in the UK. Politicians are being shown up on TV and radio and their inability to give any coherent argument is being laid bare. So of course there is no pathway, other than condemnation.

InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 27/09/2021 19:04

What a load of cobblers.

Sex is immutable in mammals. They may as well have said that the idea that the Earth is kind of round is baseless.

Gender identities are not valid? What's that even supposed to mean? There's no empirical evidence for them - claims that they exist are (haha) baseless.

How does it affect women's or children's rights?

What rights are being rolled back?

It's all just vague waffle, isn't it?

Hungary recently passed a law in the style of Section 28 - Poland recently banned abortion - those are concrete, real things that can be specified. They can't be concrete when talking about the UK.

Artichokeleaves · 27/09/2021 19:20

Conflict with sex based rights, women's equality and rights, LGB rights, safeguarding, freedom of belief....

Missed all those bits, council. Oddly enough. Wonder why.

And how is not believing in Self ID denying the existence of transness?

Given I expect the original had all the capital letters in the right place, and the lowercase version is an entirely different thing, not believing that Self ID is a good thing is an opinion on a mooted law, not a person or persons!

But hey! Mangling the language is what they do!

FindTheTruth · 09/11/2021 07:01

People are slowly waking up to see it's not anti-trans but anti-ideology. an extremist belief system that many trans disagree with. The 5000 women protesting in Madrid have been ignored by their government and the European Council. Deep capture.

As PPs have said, exactly which trans civil liberties are being denied?

And for that matter, which rights for women and children are being rolled back?

Children have never had a “right” to harm themselves (assuming the council is talking about changes to the way puberty blockers are dished out).

And the only way their rhetoric about women’s rights makes sense is if they’re lumping trans identifying males in with that category and talking about the retention of single sex exemptions. And even THEN, their rights aren’t being rolled back! In the absolute worst (in their eyes) case you could state they’d be staying exactly the same as they have been for the last 11 years.

Stopping plans for self ID, rolling back the inclusion of male-sexed prisoners in the female estate and generally asserting existing sex based exemptions properly are not denying trans civil liberties.

I was a remainer, but it’s nonsense like this from EU bodies that makes me think the right decision was reached in the end.

highame · 09/11/2021 09:46

Is it possible they are focusing on the UK because they daren't focus on some of the EU states such as Poland who will not implement self i-d. We have good laws in this country for all discriminated groups but this is ignored consistently by EU and US. Blaming us is a cover for the complete batshittery of what they are proposing.

allmywhat · 09/11/2021 10:53

women’s and children’s rights

Children’s rights to choose experimental mental health interventions that will sterilise them? And I assume there should be quote marks around “women.”
