Does anyone have a good enough understanding of US law to explain the implications of this? It looks to me as though it's a mess, with the bundling together of sexual orientation and gender identity causing all sorts of problems, but I'll be the first to admit I don't understand the context.

YY what is gay doing in there?

In the end in USA this is a right v left political football.

And they don't have anything like the protections here for certain characteristics.

It's a totally different kettle of fish.

And that's one reason why when USA posters come on here their points make little sense to those here.

I think they've kind of failed to make any proper discrimination laws like our Equality Act, and they've had court judgments which said "well, sexual orientation and gender identity are kind of the same thing as sex, so let's act as if the legislation about sex discrimination/equality applies to those too".

Which means there's absolutely no consideration about how to handle conflicts, like men wanting to play in women's spots. Unlike the UK's Equality Act which says explicitly sports can be female only for fairness.
