Donating Trans by Helen Joyce via Sex Matters - my MP is on the list now

I did donate a copy but after some thought, I chose to send it to someone other than my MP.

For quite a long time, the list of MP's receiving a copy hasn't been updated, and my MP and the other local MP's were not on it.

I've just looked again now, thinking that if my MP wasn't there, I might be able to manage another donated copy - but the list was updated three days ago and someone else had nominated my MP and one of the other local MP's as well.

I'm so pleased, not just because my MP is going to receive a copy, but because I know there's someone else in my local area (possibly two someones) who wants the local MP's to read it. I don't know if that person is on here, and even if they are, I haven't said which MP is mine, but it means so much to know that they've nominated our MP to receive the book.

So thank you to everyone who has been able to nominate someone to receive the book Smile

The link is below if anyone wants to check the list or nominate someone. I wish they would list other public figures besides MP's. I was curious to know if anyone from the Greene King chain has been nominated.

im about half way through the book myself, its heavy going at times and im yelping in horror at some of it, but it has started to clarify things, and for me to realise I am right on some of the points.
will I dare to give it to my 26 year old daughter who is a bit TWAW !
it a bloody good book

SpindleWhorl · 30/08/2021 19:43

My MP is now on the list!

I've ordered a copy for my myself, and will maybe send it on to a senior local councillor, or donate it to a library.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/08/2021 20:41

Really pleased to see my MP now on the list after I donated a copy.

Coatandhat · 30/08/2021 21:28

Me too. I donated one for my MP and am so pleased to see that someone else has had one sent to the other MP in my town. Like you say, it makes you feel less alone.

Coatandhat · 30/08/2021 21:43

Slight derail - this video from Posie Parker about Foyles Bookshop is interesting. I'd looked for Trans in my local Waterstones and the single copy was hiding away in the Politics section, not with the other prominently displayed bestsellers.

Binglebong · 30/08/2021 22:34

Glad to see my MP is on there, I can't afford to donate or buy for myself but cheering to see I'm not alone here.

I saw this earlier and thought she'd done really well to make the point.

Waterstones were actually very good at tracking down a book on this issue for me, Amazon have blocked it from sale, WH Smiths took the order, pratted about, and refunded my money. Waterstones had the book to me within 10 days of me placing the order. So I was hopeful that they at least are not taking part in cancel culture as an organisation.

But individual staff members might take part in this kind of sneaking censorship and it does need watching.

My MP (the odious Crispin Blunt) had been sent a copy when I looked, so I sent one to the CEO of a rainbow washed large charity.

MayContainNits · 31/08/2021 10:40

I read Trans over the weekend on my library's BorrowBox app - and wish I could send a high five to whichever librarian had put it on there. Since it was effectively a free read, I'm going to pay that forward by sending a copy to the MP of my old constituency.

Yes, dense reading at times, esp the US legislation sections, but very very clear.

GoldenBlue · 31/08/2021 10:52

Amazon do have it for sale, both hardback and on kindle. I've ordered to kindle and it has arrived safely

Whereareyourshoes · 31/08/2021 13:34

Glad to see the list updated - have donated to my MSP and a charity CEO. Would be wonderful if they read it with an open mind. Will donate another copy when funds allow.

Good, I'm glad they have this one.

It was a different book I had problems with, When Harry Became Sally by Ryan T Anderson. Amazon took it off sale after pressure. It just vanished from the website and even independent booksellers can't sell it through Amazon.

I've made a bit of a project for myself to try and support banned books and canceled authors, so I made it a mission to track it down (to the point of finding his American publisher and contacting them to ask if they knew where I could buy the book here.). I print off some information and articles to go with each book, to explain why it was banned or why the author was cancelled. I didn't start the project due to this particular issue but a lot of the books and authors now have been sucked into the debate.

Mines not on that list, and in Wales we have to double it to include senedd members too.

Extra important here as we don't want Wales to go the way Scotland has!

I will add it to my to do list.

Artichokeleaves · 31/08/2021 17:20

Thank you for bumping this. My MP will be receiving a copy.

All 60 Senedd members have been sent a copy. Someone set up a crowdfunder for it and it was fully funded in 11 days.
NewMutiny · 31/08/2021 19:07

Ooooh. Who is sending to Stephen Hammond? Brava that woman!

Although I am not sure what he professes in public if Stephen actually thinks TWAW I will happily eat a copy of Trans.

Gingercake2018 · 31/08/2021 19:14

@OldCrone
Yes, spotted that the second time i looked. Didn't scroll down far enough the first time. Just my MP to send one to then.

allmywhat · 31/08/2021 19:29

Just saw on Glinner’s newsletter that Twitter Monty wants to copy this project, and send Shon Faye’s book to MPs.

🤐

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/08/2021 19:32

Let them compare and contrast, say I.

Based on that joint review that was shared on here, sending them the other book might backfire and actually help make the GC case even stronger.

It is not just bookshops which make Trans hard to find. I searched for ‘trans’ on Goodreads and it didn’t come in the top hits. I had to search for it under Helen Joyce’s name. I guess some TRA writes the algorithm.

I tried the same thing on LibraryThing after reading your comment.

Just searching Trans didn't bring it up but searching Helen Joyce did, and so did typing Trans: When Ideology but it was difficult to get to that point and a lot of other works came up with just the word 'trans' so I feel her book should have been in that search and it wasn't.
