Most people respect the need for privacy and safeguarding! Good to see it on paper though :)

Franca123 · 25/08/2021 16:32

I remember teenage boys being really horrible about female bits and bodily processes. Why on earth would we force teenage girls to use the loo where these boys can hear and possibly see things? If I girl doesn't fully flush all the blood down thr girl, most girls won't shame them for that. But a whole load of boys would. It makes me so mad girls are being put in this situation.

CoronaPeroni · 25/08/2021 16:50

Southend seafront has a block of 10 toilets. 3 are men's urinals, 7 are mixed. They all stink obviously and I tried 3 before I found one with a dry seat (no toilet paper to be found). It's very hard hovering when you get to my age! I am waiting for a reply from Southend Council as to why there are no women's toilets. I mean all they have to do is remove the stick man from 3 toilet doors it's not hard.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 25/08/2021 17:13

Vanishingly few women and girls actually want to share toilets, let alone changing rooms, showers, hospital wards, dormitories etc with men they don't know. It's why we are never consulted. Find me a school, university, hospital, union or workplace that has actually asked women if they want this. There won't be one.

What I can never understand is why all these men who are so determined that women and girls must not have boundaries or rights to say no get so much power? When even Marks and Spencers openly acquiesces to their demands despite all the evidence of risks to women and girls and countless pissed off women customers...... Confused

Every time it reminds me just how much power even vile men who don't respect boundaries or safeguarding can have.

MidsomerMurmurs · 25/08/2021 17:19

I tend to to think that mixed sex is a better label than unisex, particularly when it comes to the reality of toilet provision.

Orgasmagorical · 25/08/2021 17:19

"Parents raised their concern as they had not been consulted on the plan, and they had not been told it was going to be in place for pupils.

Staff were not even aware of the plan, ahead of school opening last week."

Shock Angry Words fail me.

MoreHairyThanScary · 25/08/2021 17:22

My nephew is at the school in question and came home after the first a back or tidied...it's not just women and girls that don't like this forced drive for mixed sex . 94% is alotofpeople

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 25/08/2021 17:33

Tbh most men I know wouldn't feel comfortable with this. My partner wouldn't even sit in the same room as dds friends alone. If dd went off to use the loo or something he'd always come and find me or potter off.

He'd probably have an attack of the vapours if he had to use a mixed toilet 😳😂😂😂

Finfintytint · 25/08/2021 17:34

I visited some public gardens yesterday. There appeared to be two separate toilets originally. The men’s had been closed off completely and the women’s were now labelled Unisex/Disabled. There were half cubicles with access to anyone who wanted to, under the doors or over the doors and no enclosed sinks or private sanitary ware provision.
I pissed in the woods nearby.

This is illegal. If they offer men only facilities they are discriminating against women if they don't also provide a single sex toilet for female only use.
averylongtimeago · 25/08/2021 17:47

It makes you wonder just who does want this? Who does it benefit to have all mixed sex facilities- whether that's toilets, changing rooms, hospital wards or prisons?

None of the men I know want this, and none of the women.

I mean we can all imagine what sort of person wants to be in a situation where females are undressed or vulnerable, and what sort of person would try to normalise it.

I can't say it, but we all know

Boys don't necessarily want this either. My son told me about the new gender neutral toilets at his school - he didn't want to go in them "too embarrassing".
After a while they reverted to girls - why? Because "nobody used them, everyone walked to the other ones instead".

Men.

Plenty of men don't want this. It's men that care enough to ask questions and raise objections or listen to women that are in short supply.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 25/08/2021 18:28

MoiCnoi problem is a lot of men would just shuffle awkwardly and go elsewhere. I can quite see my dp pissing in the bushes like the lady further up. He wouldnt feel comfortable at all using a mixed toilet.

And the main reason for this will be saving money. Less toilet provision means less maintenance and cleaning of facilities.

InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 25/08/2021 18:55

This is in line with regular YouGov polling - hardly anyone is happy with mixed-sex only toilets.

That's a good point. I don't actually believe that every single man who argues for mixed sex changing, showers, toilets etc is a weapons grade creep. I hope that a lot of them only listen to the men insisting on this. Because it comes with a major dollop of emotional blackmail (sad males wishing to reject manhood etc) alongside a life time of ignoring women's voices, they cheerfully hand over women's spaces to them.
TabbyStar · 25/08/2021 21:37

I went to a museum with a bank of toilets that were mixed sex the other day. They were full size doors with the sink inside but they were tucked around a corner and deserted. I felt really uneasy and then didn't use them later before we left because of this, I felt safer using the toilet at a cafe, which although it was mixed sex also opened out onto a room with people around. I was surprised how unsafe I felt at the museum.

allthewaytorenoandback · 25/08/2021 21:40

I had (past tense, she dumped me for being GC) a very diminutive friend (five foot and with a long term eating disorder so also very frail) who sneered at women worrying about "who has pissed in a toilet before them" and said that she can "handle herself" in mixed sex toilets and changing rooms and the only solution is a third space for people who can't bear mixed sex spaces Confused

She also treats her (only) child like little lord fauntleroy and took him into the accessible toilet with her at least up until the age of five (when I last saw her) and I honestly believe she did not want female children to have toilet and changing areas and toilets away from adult men because her gilded son did not have that opportunity so why should any child lesser than her son have that? I appreciate she was basically mentally ill, but there we go, it's a perspective I've seen in the wild.

I saw a similar set up in hitchin town centre. Two mens, two mixed. unbelievable

If you click through all the options to segment the variables, the trend is remarkably consistent across all subsets - high 70s-80% when you combine the single sex loos only or single sex loos + gender neutral option. The only group that it significantly deviates towards favouring gender neutral facilities is age 18-24, but reverses at age 25+. Basically the stage of life before babies, wrangling toddlers, letting slightly older kids go unaccompanied, carers with disabled or elderly family members, knackered pelvic floors, frequent toileting due to prostate trouble or womb/vaginal prolapse etc etc. Everyone needs safety, privacy and suitable facilities. Most people with an iota of life experience know that. It is not rocket science.

littlbrowndog · 25/08/2021 22:09

It’s weird isn’t it.

Like women have suddenly risen up and said off all our lives we have wanted mixed sex toilets

Like school children have suddenly said we want want mixed sex toilets

Like women have never said. Fed up queuing give us more women’s toilets

No ,women have been demonstrating for mixed sex toilets throughout the land. Thank god we have been given this

Schoolchildren have been demanding mixed toilets. There has been demonstrations throughout the land.

Thank god we have been given what we demonstrated for

Children and women. Who have the least power

Thank god us women and children have got what we asked for …………

Just10moreminutesplease · 25/08/2021 22:17

I have no problem with mixed toilets if they are done properly. Fully enclosed cubicles with floor to ceiling walls and their own sink.

In fact I’d much prefer this set up as it allows parents of opposite sex children to accompany them without potentially offending others.

But if this can’t be guaranteed then we need single sex provisions.

Voice0fReason · 25/08/2021 22:39

Men still piss on the seat and all over the floor.
I want women-only toilets.

It's also very useful to have some unisex toilets that are large enough for 2 people, without taking provision away from disabled people.

And this will certainly address the issue of sexual abuse in schools ... not
