This is so sad and disturbing to read, and sadly probably more common than we think.
We know that men will take advantage if they can. Even if some women participated, you can bet it was because they had nowhere to go, and probably knew it would make life easier for them.

Talk about abuse of power! But hey, it never happens and women are being hysterical and overreacting .

At least he got a substantial sentence. But yes I expect this is more common than is reported.

Why are there male prison officers in the female estate at all, unless they are specialists such as in psychiatric nursing?

Why would a man want to work in a women's prison? Obvious answer?

Given that there have also been a few cases in the papers of inappropriate activity between female prison officers and male inmates (though no suggestion that it wasn't consensual), I believe that we ought to restrict employment of prison officers to only those who are the same sex as the inmates. Men guard men, women guard women.

We need to restore single sex divisions to the inmates as a priority though.

I think making women's prisons male free, and extending that to the warders is imperative. As as been noted on threads passim, the more that transwomen are moved to the female estate, the more that male prison officers will be employed. Why? Because of the strength disparity between males and females, which means that female prison officers would find it difficult to intervene and restore order if a transwoman inmate attacked another inmate.

There are many reasons why female officers work in the male estate.
As shown on these boards, quite often men have, what could euphemistically be called an "unhelpful attitude" towards women. This can be for many reasons. It does them good to be given orders by women, women who are not scared of them, woman who will not take their shit. It also builds trust in women, which is why sometimes they have offended against women in the first place.
There will always be officers, of either sex, who will be manipulated, but it is important that the positives of employing women in the male estate are not overshadowed by a few bad apples.
