In my lifetime we've gone from public debates about whether creating laws about hate speech and hate crime was a good idea, to using the concept of hate speech to shut down public discussion and demonise people who want to make controversial statements. We seem to be on the cusp of using it to be able to use the law to enforce orthodoxy of thought in many sectors, including academia.
Might be time to lose the concept. It doesn't seem to have actually had real positive effects in making us all into better people or preventing real hate organisations from existing - quite the opposite really.
