Has anyone watched C4’s ‘Trans Kids: It’s Time to Talk’?

Not quite finished watching but I think it’s brilliant. It’s hosted by a woman who, for her whole childhood, was convinced she was a boy and felt what would now be termed gender dysphoria. When she went through puberty it simply faded and now she lives happily as a woman.

It’s all very interesting. It speaks to a variety of people, but no charities that support trans people because they refused to engageHmm

Certainly worth a watch!

Think this is from 2018 - there's a longish thread from when it was first on - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3430608-Stella-OMalley-Trans-Kids-Its-Time-To-Talk

How many of us on FWR felt like this? I wanted to be a boy from about 7 til about 14 - I wore my brother's clothes, told everyone I was a boy, was very upset that I couldn't go to (male-only, at the time) scouts, wanted to play rugby.

I hated my boobs/periods. As did many of my peers. We all grew up to be women because at the time we had no choice. Had we been told we could change sex I for one would have jumped at the chance.

Of course the trans charities didn't participate.

Stella O'Malley now co-hosts an excellent podcast.

FlyPassed · 10/07/2021 20:42

Stella has a podcast with Sasha Ayad, an American therapist, worth listening.

Here they both are on Benjamin Boyce's yt channel

Here's Stella again

And this one is just Sasha

Ooops @necessary I took too long posting Grin

OhHolyJesus · 10/07/2021 20:45

Stella O Malley is brilliant on this issue, from the documentary to Thoughtful Therapists and Genspect. She is a shining beam of sense.

She makes a good point here about any qualified and sensitive therapist being able to help confused children, it doesn't need to be a 'gender specialist', which is where some issues begin (or her worse).

I make no apology for the media source. Had the BBC, Channel 4 or ITV interviewed Stella I would be sharing that, but they didn't so I can't.

PearlyAdriatic · 10/07/2021 20:59

Ah! Wonderful, thanks everyone. I didn’t have a clue it was so old, I just came upon it while I was searching through the C4 on the demand thingGrin

If we're allowed Sasha links too, here's Sasha being interviewed by a fish

And the follow-up where she gets grilled by a bird

NecessaryScene · 10/07/2021 21:13

I must say, that at the end of that first clip, it's a bit weird to find out that Sasha has a body. I'd only ever seen her head and shoulders so far :)

Olly Lambert, the director, gave a very funny (and shocking) talk on the making of that documentary, and the way that the trans activists closed ranks and wouldn't talk. It's here

I think that Olly Lambert lost close friends over his having made it. And he didn't start off remotely gender critical, he was just innocently trying to explore the issues.

NecessaryScene · 10/07/2021 21:31

Oh, thanks, AnotherLass. I'd forgotten that one - that is brilliant.

I recall him saying he had an easier time making an Israeli vs Palestinian documentary. Both sides there were like "who are you interviewing from the other side? Oh cool, they're good." But trying to get the trans-rights orgs to talk? Nah...

OneEpisode · 10/07/2021 21:38

The video AnotherLass video is amazing

Oh wow. I hadn't seen that. Absolutely fascinating.

There's good stuff linked in this thread but for anyone who watches the Stella O'Malley video, the Olly Lambert one is then a must. The fragility of trans activism is continually gobsmacking.
