Mr S hears word that the editorial floors of the Guardian and its Sunday sister the Observer have become riven with tensions over the perennial problem of trans rights. WhatsApp groups are ablaze with talk that Observer commentator Sonia Sodha could become the next feminist hounded out of the group, following Suzanne Moore’s purging in November.

I happened across this whilst doing a simple search. The people who are hounding Sonia and others like her, are convinced that the Guardian and Observer are "transphobic". I wonder if LOJ realises that?

Why on earth are they so desperate to hold on to OJ? They've confused his million followers and Twitter likes with someone with actual substance. The Guardian need to stop treating their writers like Instagram influencers - Twitter likes and engagement do not trump bullying of colleagues - how dare they think they control what a colleague writes.

EarthSight · 09/07/2021 20:00

How is her employment status different from Hadley Freeman? If Sonia is hounded out or she leaves, surely Hadley can't be far behind then?

EsmaCannonball · 09/07/2021 20:02

I only read the Guardian now for the Weekend Quiz and the occasional article, usually by someone like Hadley Freeman, because someone on social media has alerted me to it. My falling out of love with the Guardian came in three stages:-

  1. A feeling, back in the 90s, that it was increasingly being written for a group of people living an aspirational middle-class lifestyle, who most definitely weren't me.
  2. A feeling about 7 or 8 years ago that it was now an American newspaper, and that I was constantly being asked to care about something that someone in America had found offensive about meringues or llamas or jeggings or whatever.
  3. Ally Fogg: a man potentially more anti-feminist than Owen Jones. Imagine being in the queue for the office Christmas buffet with those two.

Oh I'd forgotten him. Yes, he's utterly awful.

Oh this! The day I banished the Saturday Guardian from my life it was like a weight was lifted from my shoulders.

And Ally Fogg, the self righteous prick - I'd forgotten about him!

A million followers for LOJ? Has his mum got multiple accounts? Who on earth are they?

Even at the Guardian - it is a truth, universally acknowledged, that a gay white man with 1M followers, is always to be preferred to a feminist WoC such as Sonia Sodha.

The bullying and harassment optics of this are either invisible or irrelevant to them, which is yet another astonishing example of institutions believing in the inevitability of their own moral rectitude - no matter what their actions.

20 to 30 demographic. Young Idealistic and very very nieve. Sad but I guess pritty standard in the general scheme of things.

My mate who is connect in left circles thinks there is 'something up' with LOJ. He would not give me details tho.

A demographic who aren't big fans of paying for journalism either. Funny that...

He really is.

statsgeek1 · 10/07/2021 03:33

Jeepers, you've got The Times(daily and Sunday), The Torygraph, The Hate(daily and Sunday), The paper they can't sell in Liverpool (so scummy), the Spectator, Russia Today, Newsnight, The GUARDIAN at editorial level and the two members of cabinet who have it in their power to really shaft trans people. Here you are moaning about the possibility that some outlet may try to push the boat out and print something mildly trans supportive or even just truthful.

Remind me again who is in a cult?

highame · 10/07/2021 07:31

I did wonder because it's an odd post in a thread about a feminist woc potentially losing her job at the behest of a misogynistic white man.
Mibbiesaye · 10/07/2021 07:57

We should be grateful to statsgeek for always bumping multiple FWR threads!

Random789 · 10/07/2021 08:11

I've just gone ahead and cancelled my supporter status. The shock of losing my annual £49 will make them think hard.
There is a bit where you can state your reasons, so i summarised what I saw as instances of hostile and bad-faith treatment of gender critical views.

The sad thing is that I don't believe that I am losing much. If they can't report in good faith on this issue, or tolerate colleagues that have different views to their own, they aren't a team of journalists; they are a bunch of social media warriors too drunk on sanctimony to do their job.

highame · 10/07/2021 08:38

Nothing to base this in except a few comments in articles but, but, but, it appears a lot of the backlash is coming from admin and associated functions. Not just the Graun but other publishing organisations.

Someone up thread talked about decline in readership but the group is wholly owned by the Scott Trust Limited, which exists to secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity. The Group's 2018 annual report (year ending 1 April 2018) indicated that the Scott Trust Endowment Fund was valued at £1.01 billion (2017: £1.03bn). Partners, a venture capital firm, increased its share to become the sole shareholder in the business.

So the Independence of the Graun is protected, but it isn't protected from political infiltration by woke, or could this be a challenge?

PurpleHoodie · 10/07/2021 08:46

The Guardian silences women’s voices.

This is a very powerful point.

It is not simply just a case of "trans" issues.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/07/2021 09:22

Cripes! We really.must learn when to stop. All that trying to maintain laws as they stand, to maintain safeguarding, the rights, dignity and safety if women and girls.

When will we stop demanding that men sort out their own issues and stop demanding women be their support humans?

Naughty wimmins!

IvyTwines2 · 10/07/2021 09:23

I think the Guardian is currently leading the Labour Party down the road to complete oblivion, which you'd hope might give them pause for thought, but apparently not. They're both coming across now like an SWP stand outside a tube station manned by a couple of shouty middle class students.

Form what I read of their overnight blathering, no.

They probably expect all of us to have read all they have written across a number if threads as one coherent utterance that we have inwardly digested.

PurpleHoodie · 10/07/2021 09:28

Is it a time-zone thing?

Do they blather from across the water?

Or are they up late n drunk?

Freespeecher · 10/07/2021 09:33

When I read the title I immediately assumed it was Hadley vs OJ. The fact that it's the middle of the road Sonia Sodha coming under fire should give both middle of the road staff and readers pause for thought.

PurpleHoodie · 10/07/2021 09:36

C109k paid circulation.

That's pretty dire, yes?
