"This isn't really a question of free speech," Harrington said. "It's a question of institutions and power." As she sees it, the Mumsnetters succeeded because they had the right attitude: "If you won't give us any power, we're going to fucking take it."

"Prosecco 4chan" !! But yes, good article.

Campervan69 · 30/06/2021 18:43

I don't actually know what that means. But it is nice to see an article explaining to the yanks that we don't have a religious far right over here.

Really great article!

'Motley coalition' 'feminist wine moms'

Grin
ArabellaScott · 30/06/2021 18:56

interesting to see the tension between NHS model and gender ideology demands spelled out, too. Great article.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 30/06/2021 18:57

Excellent article. Is it likely to be widely seen across the Atlantic?

ErrolTheDragon · 30/06/2021 19:07

It's quite an interesting take from an 'outsiders' perspective. I like this:
"Mothers as a group are very pragmatic," Harrington said. "You can argue about Marxist theory until the cows come home, but if a child needs feeding a child needs feeding."
That maternal pragmatism has defined the groups campaigning against self-ID, some of which spun out of Mumsnet threads.

Now there’s a better name for this board!

Feminism: Sex and Prosecco…

Good article, though I’m very sure it isn’t us that have achieved institutional capture… we are indeed fighting back against it though, one court case at a time.

NiceGerbil · 30/06/2021 19:24

Sightly wonky, implying that GRC requires surgery.

But on the whole interesting and a really good stab at outlining the different social cultural etc background of a different country.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 30/06/2021 20:06

Maternal pragmatism - how true.

If you won't give us any power, we're going to fucking take it - the best bit!

MoonlightApple · 30/06/2021 21:25

@Campervan69 I think by Prosecco 4chan they are probably referring to the fact that 4chan (an anything goes Internet forum) users have organised rallies and internet campaigns around their interests. Which is mainly far-right hate stuff. So Mumsnet is like the almost respectable version. Or something like that.

All the same, I think we’ve been doing well in conscious-raising - pinched from Twitter so not sure of the veracity but I thought it was impressive!

Consciousness-raising!

Datun · 30/06/2021 21:53

It's a good article. Wrong on a couple of points. But overall a good analysis. And certainly sets out the profit driven pharma motivation which is overwhelming parents of confused kids in the US.

broccolibush · 01/07/2021 18:04

I found it a bit sneery. That women couldn’t possibly organise without the might of trade union experience. And the “feminist wine moms” spoke volumes IMO. It’s better than most other stuff out there but that doesn’t make it good.

zanahoria · 01/07/2021 18:38

not having a religious right has been a bonus over here

Delphinium20 · 01/07/2021 19:38

"The more people identify as trans, the larger the market for medical transition, meaning that U.S pharmaceutical companies have a profit motive to fund trans activism. Pfizer, which manufactures testosterone injections used in hormone replacement therapy, is a "platinum partner" of the LGBT advocacy group Human Rights Campaign, for example."

This is very helpful for US feminists. I'm thrilled this article was posted and congrats MN!!!
