Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A simple summary of where we are?

Hi, I've read extensively around the clashes between women's rights and self Id etc.
I've had several conversations with my DH who agrees with me, but still finds it a bit far fetched that men have been put in women's prisons, crime statistics recorded as women. It's not that he doesn't believe me, it's just he is a bit googled this is happening and endorsed by government, police etc.
I'd like to source a nice, simple summary of what's happened and how. Where we are and how we got here, but I'm not sure where to go.
It needs to be fairly short as he's not a big reader (which is why he hasn't read widely on it and relies on secondhand information from me).
I'd also like something to hand to explain to people simply, as I felt like a right idiot trying to explain my protest vote to people who have no idea what's been allowed through.
Thanks

get him to look at 'Fair play for women' they evidence the data for males in womens prisons....currently around 11 I believe, not all with GRCs. Also Keep prisons single sex have good info.

I personally think this situation will change pretty soon, now that gov't deps are distancing themselves from Stonewalls dodgy advice & I believe an ex inmate has bought a legal case against the MOJ...

MouseyTheVampireSlayer · 19/06/2021 20:56

Thanks. I was kind of hoping for an article that summaries everything, not just prisons.

Well, you know, this is a subject that is hard to summarise. There are some complex and lengthy histories to it.

The basic truths - sex is immutable, 'gender' is sexism, etc, are fairly logical and common sense.

Trying to explain how governments, businesses, the NHS, schools and universities have been overtaken by queer post modernist theory that says that 'woman' is just a word that doesn't mean anythign, that sex is a spectrum and can be changed, takes a bit more explaining.

Have you read the 'break it down for me' thread?

MouseyTheVampireSlayer · 20/06/2021 14:50

I've read some of the break it down for me thread. There's no way DH will read it all Grin I suppose a whistle stop explanation of capture does not exist yet.

Hopefully someone will write one, then! It's maybe hard to see in media res, too

NonnyMouse1337 · 20/06/2021 15:07

It's a complex area with lots of overlapping concerns.

For Women Scotland have come up with the best summary that I could find so far. It's still lengthy but has links to back up the statements.

OP, has your DH read Animal Farm by George Orwell?

If not, it’s really short and easy to read and whilst it’s about a completely different historical subject (The Russian Revolution) I think there are parallels with the extremes of the TRA movement who, in the book, would be those with the mantra “All animals are equal, some are more equal than others”.

There is a new book due out this summer about the earth being flat that I think will also pique interests (see what I did there Wink).

Leafstamp · 20/06/2021 15:32

This is the book:

I’m not connected to the author or book in anyway at all.

NecessaryScene · 20/06/2021 15:41

Afraid I don't have anything meeting the OP's need to hand, at least in written form.

Maybe you can find something in video form on this thread, but none of them are short and snappy...

I'm wondering if we might see more "beginner's" stuff coming out of GB News. Andrew Doyle did a not-bad 5-minute "what's this Woke stuff about?" in his show, although the gender stuff only gets a passing mention:

This is a 5 min video

Pretty much explains how it started

Where we are?

Tory govt rejected self ID last year and Germany and Spain have followed. In the U.K. self ID supporters strongly promoted the this hate crime consultation trying to make 'misgendering' a hate crime) and later this year in Sept there will be a consultation about conversion therapy (trying to make it so talking about not being born I the wrong body to be considered conversion therapy).

As PPs say, this is complex, it's multi-layered and hard to summarise but to cut through the discussion I would look at the law. One simple example could be the MOMA Bill as the language around that is a good example of where we have got to, and then see the latest in the Times where Stonewall would like the words mother and boy and girl not to be used.

The issue of transwomen being held in the female estate was specifically lobbied for by trans associations, they say because if they could make it work there, they could show it would be safe anywhere.

scottish-women.com/2018/09/12/scottish-prison-service-policy-written-by-trans-lobby-group/amp/

(Probably also because hardly anyone seems to care about women prisoners so they were an easy mark.)

Although it was written in 2017 it sadly seems not a lot has yet been done to resolve the problems.

I think the thread 'break it down for me' is also worth a look.

This article is written about the Labour Party

labour-uncut.co.uk/2021/06/14/starmers-disastrous-pride/

But actually it does touch on a lot of the major issues in the debate therefore is quite a good summary. I read another great summarising article recently but I can't quite remember where. I will post it if I can remember.
