Professor’s refusal to address trans student by preferred pronouns protected by free speech, judge rules

A professor has won his appeal in a lawsuit against a small, public university in Ohio which rebuked him for failing to address a transgender student using the student’s preferred gender terms.

The 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the Shawnee State University had violated protections for free speech and free exercise of religion when it effectively mandated Professor Nicholas Meriwether to use the student’s preferred gender terms. ...

“If professors lacked free-speech protections when teaching, a university would wield alarming power to compel ideological conformity.”

“A university president could require a pacifist to declare that war is just, a civil rights icon to condemn the Freedom Riders, a believer to deny the existence of God, or a Soviet to address his students as ‘comrades. That cannot be.”

I think this was from a few weeks ago, but for some reason is being reported in the UK today.

Interestingly at the end of this article it says: "This article was amended on 24 May 2021 to change a reference from ‘correct pronouns’ to ‘preferred pronouns’."

As it was based on an AP press release can only imagine that AP like yahoo news is now sharing "news" that accepts the trans narrative as THE narrative.

Great news

Very happy to hear that 'correct pronouns' was edited to say 'preferred pronouns'. Really feels like freedom of speech is starting to be taken seriously again!

Excellent news.

This is great news.

Yes that’s quite concerning and good that it was corrected.

I feel this is a good example of an institution that "insisted". Although I am totally opposed to TWAW, I would always, as courtesy, use an individual's preferred pronoun.

But this is the US - and a single state - and we must be careful of assuming that similar rulings are automatic in the UK.

Excellent news. This would be that pesky first amendment which Prince Harry described as “bonkers” (because it also allows a free press)

I posted it as much because it seems that the only response to the effective lobbying of trans activists, now embedded in official democrat policy seems to be the legal system. Much as we are finding here.

But also, should point out that even though the Independent has been made to altered correct to preferred they have headed this news story with a huge photo of Trump, and pointed out that the Judge was appointed by Trump.
