Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Is anyone else in the FB group about Radio 4 that has just splintered due to the trans debate?

It’s a group that’s for talking about Radio 4 programs (Radio 4 it’s not just for the middle aged) that was set up a while ago, it’s just splintered because some debates about gender identity got very heated. The original admin, who’d been absent for years heard about it and threw out the mods who’d been running the group for because he felt it had become anti trans so they have now set up a new group ( Radio 4 it’s not just for the middle aged 2.0). It’s got very heated, I mostly just lurk but I think it’s interesting to see the issues are being played out in a public forum. It’s made me realise there are more people talking about the issue of women’s rights than I thought.

No but now I want to join....!

DappledThings · 24/05/2021 10:14

I'm there!

WhoEatsPopTarts · 24/05/2021 10:25

It’s a shame it’s got so heated, but I’m finding it encouraging to hear the issue being talked about.

Lol, found it, five GC fb mates already there Grin

I’ve been watching this unfold. The original group had been getting quite interesting, I’ve joined 2.0 and hope the open discussions can continue there.

The admin of 1.0 behaved appallingly.

TherightsideofHERstory · 24/05/2021 10:51

Another long time member here. Enlightening to see what has happened, it really highlights that although many of the posters on those issues were the same ones each time, it was being absorbed by a huge number of people who perhaps hadn’t thought about it much before.

I’m in both groups at the moment but will leave the original soon, may just have to report a few more “t*y cunts” post before then!

The TRAs are not doing themselves any favours in their behaviour on the original group, and it’s a very different audience demographically to their usual Twitter lovefest. I suspect most onlookers are not coming away with the impression that these people really are all about being kind!

I wasn't in the other group, but I am now in the new group, recognise some friends who I know are on here.

PearPickingPorky · 24/05/2021 11:34

How many people were in the original group?

drspouse · 24/05/2021 11:36

I think over 10K.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 24/05/2021 17:56

I'm in group one, do you have a link to group 2?

ElBandito · 24/05/2021 19:08

Yes I'm there! Over 2000 people have joined the new group in under 24 hours and it's definitely getting more traffic posting wise than the old group.

I don't listen to radio 4 but I've joined the group to see what the deal is! Maybe I'll start now... I am almost middle aged after all Grin

nauticant · 24/05/2021 19:40

If you listen to Radio 4 you'll hear things like Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics which is worth half an hour of anyone's time:

IntoAir · 25/05/2021 19:55

Yes, I'm in both & watched it unfurl over the weekend.

Also, as others say, it's heartening to see how many people don't swallow the gender extremist ideology (TRA stuff). Although what I've noticed is that a lot of people (mostly men, from what I can see, but that's anecdotal!) see transphobia as akin to homophobia, because they see trans stuff aligned with gay stuff.

So I have been patiently explaining the differences - that one is about sexual orientation, the other about some sort of confusion about gender never not a pedagogue

Feel free to link them to Jane Clare Jones:

Mollyollydolly · 25/05/2021 20:58

Just joined the rebel group .. thanks for the link.

OhPea · 25/05/2021 21:02

I watched it unfold in “real time” and have been a member of that group since I first joined Facebook many years ago. The second I saw his post I knew it would be because the admins were feminists - though robustly allowed all debate (as long as polite and also pertaining to an R4 programme). All the active members have moved to the new group, which I have done.

I knew nothing of this thread, or the backstory, but came on to see if anyone knows the radio 4 not just for the middle aged FB group. It has just occurred to me it’s not been in my feed for a little while (probably joined about 6 months ago) and I think I’ve been blocked! For getting into a very mild discussion (I thought) about a baseless claim someone was making against the BBC. Has it imploded entirely, or am I blocked?

VaggieMight · 01/08/2022 22:09

It's still there so I think you must be blocked. The other group is better anyway.

Itsalloutofwhack · 01/08/2022 22:16

Thanks Vaggie. I’m a little bit thrilled on the one hand but also a bit perplexed as I absolutely did not say anything offensive, although I was called a transphobe nevertheless. Off to 2.0 then …

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 01/08/2022 22:25

I got blocked in the original group for liking the wrong post!

imagakster · 01/08/2022 22:31

DappledThings · 01/08/2022 22:37

I'm still in both groups. There's been very little about women's rights or related in months. The original group has been massively tedious recently because of an arse called Bill who posts constantly about how Zelensky (or Zoomlensky as he oh so hilariously calls him) should surrender because Putin would totally then be happy with Donbas and immediately stop his campaign of genocide.
