Also:
Children can receive PBS and X-Sex hormones against parent wishes
There are fines for (even accidentally) mis-gendering

It's atrocious.
Even if you're not on Twitter could you please read this and share widely. Down the thread a little there is more information in English.

And the petition. Is there anyone here who can (even if roughly) translate this?

From that link OP:

The Women’s Human Rights Campaign (WHRC) is an international, non-denominational non-governmental organization that is funded through donations and supported on a voluntary basis by committed women.

It was founded in Great Britain in 2019 to publicize the “Declaration on the Rights of Women on the Basis of Their Gender”.

The declaration reaffirms the rights of women and girls based on their gender and combats the discrimination they experience by replacing the gender category with "gender identity".

Also

NO! ON A "GENDER IDENTITY" LAW IN GERMANY!

Defend women's rights, children's rights and freedom of speech for all!

MrsMidClegs · 17/05/2021 17:21

Well that's confusing!

Was will das Gesetz einführen?

The German parties BUENDNIS 90 / DIE GRUENEN (German Green Party) and the FDP (Free Democratic Party) try to introduce:

Self-ID, which means any man can declare himself a "woman" an vice versa.
Compelled speech.
Irreversible surgical interventions like genital and breast amputations on minors from age 14 against the will of the parents by court order.
If you live outside of Germany please describe the situation in your country or your personal experiences in a comment. Have similar laws been introduced? What impact have you seen on the rights of women and girls, children and parents, and free speech?

In many ways, this reform proposal is much much worse than the UK one.

It makes it possible to penalise anyone who dares name a male person a man who has self-declared as a woman, even if such a person is indistinguishable from any other man.

Not falling afoul of the law will be even more difficult because applicants can change their self-declared sex once a year under this proposal.

It also, and explicitly, requires all private contracts and public documents to be retrospectively altered to erase all mention of the applicants sex and previous name.

It also, and this is only mentioned in the accompanying notes, seeks to allow children from age 14 to take puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones without parental permission and this even in cases where a court has rejected the child's request to be allowed to undergo surgery due to the court finding the child unable to give consent and to understand the lifelong consequences of such surgery, and/or such surgery having been judged detrimental to the child's health and wellbeing.

And this proposal gives transgender people a right that other Germans are explicitly denied: the right to easily change their name. For various reasons this is extremely difficult in Germany. No one who is in debt or has a criminal record can just change their name. This is intended to combat fraud and other crimes.

Of course no lawmaker championing the proposal can envision a scenario where self-declaration of legal sex may be abused for nefarious reasons...

Die spinnen, die Gruenen.

And they are going to win the election too, or at least be in a position to form a coalition government, I can feel it in my bones.
I'm going to send the petition to my sister and my nieces.

TheHamsterCatcher · 17/05/2021 18:39

The potential for accidentally misgendering has got to be even more of a complete nightmare for anyone who isn't a native speaker. German grammar is a minefield!
A minefield with additional traps and wild animals roaming... just waiting to catch you out!

Does accidentally misgendering the cheese count? I always get that one wrong.

MrsMidClegs · 17/05/2021 19:17

Are we seeing this happening more in countries with poor human rights records? Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Canada (will state that the latter 3 bear no comparison to Germany.. I am thinking of those 3 having poor track records of their treatment of indigenous people).
Is this over-correcting for past errors?
