Are Glasgow Women’s Library misrepresenting the Equality Act

They are advertising a job thus:

"Applications will be accepted from women only* under Schedule 9, part 1 of the Equality Act 2010

*All women-only opportunities and events are inclusive of Trans and Intersex women, as well as non-binary and gender fluid people who are comfortable in a space that centres the experience of women."

In what sense is the Equality Act subject to asterisks or am I missing the point?

Calling out intersex women as if they aren’t already covered by the term women is grim

Tibtom · 15/05/2021 20:38

And transmen come under 'women' too. But we know that is not what they mean and yes they are misrepresenting the act.

Is this the city with a male CEO of the Rape Crisis Centre?

PrimalLass · 15/05/2021 20:45

No that's Edinburgh.

Glasgow Women's Library is fully captured too though.

Yep. The callous ignorance of people who think they have the moral high ground is breathtaking.

Yes - in the act TM are protected under the categories of sex (female) and gender reassignment, so if the library does not accept TM applicants, then they are in breach of the EA (10) for discrimination based on gender reassignment. So TM in, TW out.

But of course accepting people who are not women is not centring women as per the job description.

Woman and self iding MTF trans people (non GRC holding legal males) is not a legally protected group and doesn't meet the criteria for the schedule 9 exemption on its own, as this is on the basis of sex.

Daft b*ggers. I used to go to this years ago when they were firsr up and running . They were dead patronising ."oh hello ,you're a working class woman , these are BOOKS , do you like BOOKS". It was good in some ways though as it was very definitely female only and I was trying to hide from the abusive father of my DS who was just a baby at the time . They should just change their name now .

They need to stop calling themselves a Women's Library. That's all.

Presuming the funding will disappear though....?
