Material Girls by Kathleen Stock is out today. I like her hashtag #YesItsADebate - this book is as important for free speech as it is for women's sex based rights

I've read the introduction and the first chapter, and I don't get the impression that she's writing to convert the true believers. It seems to be aimed more at those who are tangentially involved, and naturally inclined simply to "be kind", but want to know what the fuss is all about.

Got mine. Looks great.

I'm pinning my hopes on Joyce's book being the definitive broad mass-market skewering that marks the tipping point in the UK.

I hope that Stock will dissect the ideology, but that Joyce will look at the political and economic context of all this, especially in the US. I don't think this whole thing has come about because of people reading Judith Butler.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 06/05/2021 19:19

I’m several chapters in. It’s very clearly set out. As an account of the intellectual origins of how we got here and a dissection of which arguments do and don’t work, it’s fantastic.

I’ve also ordered Helen Joyce’s book which as others have said will hopefully be complementary to it in covering the social and political consequences more.

There have been great reviews so far in the papers - Sunday Times, Telegraph, and Stella O'Malley did one for Evening Standard. OldTurtleNewShell is right about reviews.

Is anyone on the Zoom meeting?

TheFleegleHasLanded · 06/05/2021 20:30

@Melroses

Is anyone on the Zoom meeting?
Yes, a new link was emailed out just after 8pm
Cheermonger · 06/05/2021 20:41

Yes I am

TheSuezCanalTugBoat · 06/05/2021 20:47

Not working

Leafstamp · 06/05/2021 20:56

Just ordered my copy, and I as I did so, was thinking of the people I can lend it to after I’ve finished! (Those that aren’t already aware of the issues).

Its tempting to buy a few copies and donate to the library/charity shops!

SmallPug · 06/05/2021 21:10

I've ordered several and I'm giving them out!

Summerdayshaze · 06/05/2021 22:13

Mine arrived today. Can’t wait to get stuck in.

EversoDelighted · 06/05/2021 23:06

I was pleased to find it in Waterstones on Saturday so bought it then. I've only read a few chapters, hoping to finish it over the weekend.

MirandaBlu · 08/05/2021 09:25

@manatsu

Oh good, already got only a one-star review on Goodreads from two weeks ago from someone who hasn't read it but is big mad because obviously Stock is saying they're not real Hmm
I reported that review and the other one written by an intellectual toddler who obviously hasn't read the book, but Goodreads ignores me. Maybe I have not been active long enough (just set up my account at the end of 2020 'cos I wanted to do the 2021 book challenge). I'd heard good things about GoodReads, but I am seeing a LOT of nonsense reviews; not sure it's worth continuing to read and post review there.

Or maybe we all need to innundate them with compaints about reviews written by misogynistic, racist, classist, homophobic, etc. infants.

Any Goodreads veterans - advice on how to use the site and filter out the nonsense? Any ideas how to report malicious reviews?

I also note that Amazon USA now have limits on their site so that it's no longer enough that you buy the specific book through them, but you also have to have spent at least $50 on Amazon USA in the past year. Um, nah, mate! Grin

ValancyRedfern · 08/05/2021 09:31

Mine arrived yesterday. I've just started it. Very clear and concise introduction to the issues so far.

SmallPug · 08/05/2021 10:01

I've seen on Twitter that the TRAs are reading - see academics anonymous. So I suspect there'll be a deluge of nasty reviews on various sites.

mollythemeerkat · 08/05/2021 13:59

Sounds like a book thats well worth reading - thought her speech on Womans Place gave a calm rational understanding of whats going on and the discussions about sex and gender and how it can influence medicine, education and the law etc.

lanadelgrey · 08/05/2021 14:22

I bought mine today. It’s hardback so prices accordingly, but you can request books from your local library and if lots of people ask for a book then they will know there is a demand

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 08/05/2021 20:24

Which 'academics anonymous' - there seem to be various accounts with variations on the name?
SmallPug · 09/05/2021 06:09

EmbarrassingAdmissions @anonacademics_uk

Various are reading. I see Roz Caveney's saying there should be an erratum slip because of what Stock says about the EA2010 & what happened this week with AEA vs EHRC. Stock isn't wrong!

Shizuku · 09/05/2021 11:16

I'm surprised to find myself in agreement with Stock on this particular page:

Will be ordering this for pay day!

@NecessaryScene1 “ Part of me wants to see a fellow mathematician deliver the killing blow. wink” hahaha! You made me remember there was the argument 2+2=5 sometimes for a while.

It’s an entrenched situation but K Scott shines philosophical reasoning onto it.
