Cowboys (new film)

This was discussed on Front Row. It’s billed as a modern western, where the mother struggles with their child’s gender identity (ftm) and so the father takes off with the child. The child actor is a trans boy and I think 10 when it was filmed in 2019.

I did want to come to this with an open mind, but the writer and director mentioned in the interview that conservatives probably wouldn’t like it Hmm Also born in the wrong body gets a mention in the trailer so I don’t know.

It looks interesting, I’m liking the child and male lead’s relationship.

The lines “what was the plan? You were supposed to protect me” are striking (I’m likely reading a different interpretation than was necessarily intended!).

Cowboys, as in very stereotypically male in the way Mermaids and Butterflies are stereotypically female? Or as in "cowboy builders", people who make a mess of a situation.

well cows are female

How awful is the mother to the child, anyone know?

Because a dad going off with a child without the mother's go ahead is not generally a good thing, or in many places a legal thing.

It’s hard to tell from the trailer to be honest. I think a police officer is after them.

I caught that part in the car. The director sounded very smug.

Is the mother a right wing/ conservative/ religious person I wonder?

No idea obv.

If so the question is how come the man married her when he's so lovely and she's so awful.

Ok speculating wildly now!

I adore Steve Zahn.

Looks like it might have something interesting to say about the issue. That the dad is well meaning, but ultimately irresponsible?

That we should be protecting our children and making decisions for them?

Massive Hmm from me at the last scene - because only boys fart and find it funny. That's what makes you male, right? If you have a vagina and find farts funny you must really be a boy.

Yet more sexist stereotypes.

Also, fuck what conservatives think. What will left wing British women think of it?
