Revealed: the secret trans-rights lobbying operation in parliament - Kirkup in the Spectator

"The APPG at the heart of this story is the APPG on LGBT+ Global Rights. The narrow fact of the story is that the group’s chair broke parliamentary rules on transparency by producing a report that was kept secret from the public but used to assemble a network of parliamentary support for a concerted attempt to persuade ministers to do something deeply controversial. Another, apparently unrelated fact, is that trans-rights campaign groups paid the equivalent of £80,000 to the APPG."

That's just shocking. Trying to get unpopular legislation enacted by stealth.

Good to see mainstream journalists covering this.

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 21/04/2021 18:16

That was such an interesting read. Sadly not surprising that the sneaky tactics are being used to try and push this through.

I wonder if there is a way of finding out what Irish politicians were lobbied like this to get the Self ID law pushed through under the radar.

Would this type of thing come up on a Freedom of Information request?

Would this type of thing come up on a Freedom of Information request?

Possibly, though you might need to word it carefully.

Has this been done before? I have a vague memory of some exposure on this but I could have dreamt it.

Maybe contact the Legal Feminist or The Countess or check the WhatDoTheyKnow website to see if there is an FOI already lodged.

You could even email Kirkup to see if he has considered looking into it?

Lobbying and secret deals are in the headlines at the moment, there is the Cameron/Greenshill debacle which seems to be expanding to cover more lobbying. I hope that sunlight will penetrate the whole of this lobbying, back room deals stuff that is going on.

Those lobbying and doing secret back room deals then presenting the public with a fait accompli would do well to witness the carnage and fall out that has just happened regarding football and the European Super League. The billionaires who connived and made the back room deals are facing a monumental backlash, MPs and the shady lobbyists take note, the public don't like stitch ups.

'the paper had been part of a significant operation aimed at securing – in private – agreement between politicians of all the major parties to amend the GRA to make it easier to change gender.'

Well, well.

happydappy2 · 21/04/2021 20:45

We simply must repeal the GRA, stop giving males the legal classification of F, and get all gender ideology out of nurseries/schools/unis. If people over the age of 25 wish to have surgery to change their appearance, thats on them-but lets not pretend people can change sex. We know it-they know it.

I read this article when it came out in March and I still don't understand why this isn't a breach of Nolan or why the APPG didn't have to declare this as a DOI/COI in every meeting and for every document.

One of many reasons that I'm not a Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards or similar (apart from the whole 'not being in a qualifying position' thing).

AyeRobot · 21/04/2021 21:28

After all these years of following this topic, I still don't understand the capitulation in the face of a very obvious necessity for caution regarding self id. Is it simply chasing the youth vote with a side helping of women don't matter (or vice versa)?
