Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Fed up, can't speak out without being torn to shreds

I made the mistake of trying to engage in an intelligent debate on twitter about sex vs gender. My comment was simple, along the lines of "nobody can change sex, everybody's entitles to live their lives with no discrimination, be great if everybody could work together on a solution" - and I got absolutely torn to shreds. People retweeting saying that people like me should just die, called the c-word, random people joining in to tell me what a cunt and worthless piece of shit I am. I rarely speak up but decided that was the wrong attitude, now I wish I didn't. I suffer with my mental health at times anyways so feeling utterly shite now. Why can't we engage in debate without it turning into a gang of randomers joining in and dishing out vile hatred?

Twitter isn't a place for intelligent debate. On any topic. It's for people to show off their politics/beliefs, find people that agree with them, and block/abuse any else that doesn't agree. It's a entire design enables that sort of behaviour rather than measured debate

AssassinatedBeauty · 03/04/2021 17:30

Should also have said that I'm sorry you were on the receiving end of all of that vileness. It is grim and depressing which is why I don't post anything on Twitter.

Childrenofthestones · 03/04/2021 17:33

Twitter is a cesspit

Olderstyle1 · 03/04/2021 17:34

I've come off Twitter OP - it's totally useless for reasonable debate. Whereas MN (in spite of the draconian rules) is a joy. Hang out here and get in touch with your inner viper! Plus cake recipes...

mediciempire · 03/04/2021 17:34

mute the tweet so you can't see the hateful replies anymore.

AdHominemNonSequitur · 03/04/2021 17:37

It's not you OP. They are projecting onto you.

Steptoeshorse1965 · 03/04/2021 17:41

I don't think social media is a place for many things, let alone for persons with mental or emotional issues. As others have echoed too, you won't find much genuine, informed debate on such either. You cannot truly change your sex, chromosomal differences in our origins and make up see to that, you can alter the physical, some of the emotional and legal, but not all things. Yes it would be nice to live a world where people got on. Discrimination is unfair, but the possibility is that you will never change what people think, not all people, we have to live with that. You are not alone in thinking what you do.

LacyEdge · 03/04/2021 18:13

It’s performative. Twitter users are desperate to demonstrate their credentials to the other disciples of their subculture of choice.

It’s not you, it’s them. Flowers

WarOnWomen · 03/04/2021 18:27

Thanks for you. Twitter is a cesspit.

I'm on Twitter but I have strict rules for myself. I only ever comment on or retweet other GC accounts or I comment on or retweet a public figure or organisation accounts when they are being dickheads. I absolutely do not tweet myself or nor do quote retweets. I also f do not engage with randomers because they can be vicious.

This.

I don’t post on there. I read comments and follow a few people. It’s not you, it’s them. There is no such thing on Twitter as discrimination on the basis of sex, only gender and therefore anything they say to you even if it is obscene and perhaps breaks guidelines will be irrelevant as you have insulted the ideology and got close to breaking the batshit guidelines yourself. Flowers

OhDear2200 · 03/04/2021 18:45

Come of Twitter that’s my advice!

lady69 · 03/04/2021 18:48

Twitter. There’s your problem.

AfternoonToffee · 03/04/2021 18:49

Sorry OP that you experienced this, I generally avoid Twitter and certainly don't tweet as my account is very much linked to my work.

However as you have discovered it is never acceptable to say you can't change sex, but it is perfectly acceptable to be absolutely abusive to those that do.

It is plain old bullying at the end of the day, I too would take it and internalise it and be a mess, but honestly it really is a case of them and not you. It is of little condolence, but the level of abuse that is being dished out is actually opening more people's eyes, when saying you can't change sex results in you being called a c* then at some point they will realise who is actually the abusive side in this.

Flowers and Cake because it sounds like you could do with a pick me up.

WarOnWomen · 03/04/2021 18:51

@OhDear2200

Come of Twitter that’s my advice!

You could, of course, but I hate the idea of women being bullied off. GC women are already a small group on Twitter and then the bullying and baiting that goes on makes women leave. I fully understand and I've had to take breaks from it from time to time but I am holding on.

Psuedoshoes · 03/04/2021 18:54

Thank you all! I've just come back from a nice long walk in the sun and read all your comments and you've lifted my spirits! I've also now closed my account and have set up a new one just so I can keep up to date with Sall Grover, Allison Bailey, etc. I think I found it really difficult being told I'm a vile bully etc whereas for all my faults I don't think I'm a bully at all! But you're all right, it's them who are the bullies. No more posting on twitter for me Grin

Glad you’re feeling more positive ! 😊

ArabellaScott · 03/04/2021 18:59

Agree with all. Twitter is for bots, tweens and those on teh very fringes.

I left it years back and instantly felt 10 x better.

Erkrie · 03/04/2021 19:00

Twitter is like a sewer full of hateful soundbites from unpleasant people who have nothing better to do than tear others down. Best to mute and move on.

Psuedoshoes · 03/04/2021 19:22

Advice well heeded! Think I just needed to hear from My People - feel at ease with the world now. Have now poured a gin and will be staying away from Twitter!

Delphinium20 · 03/04/2021 19:30

I am so sorry. Sometimes I look at comments on articles that seemed biased against women's rights and despite the article, I'm always heartened by the overwhelmingly kind, yet clearly GC comments from a wide range of voices. That helps me realize that while you got a pile on on Twitter, there were likely many lurkers who agreed with you. You were up against a mob, not up against reasonable people. Hugs OP

Hophopandaway · 03/04/2021 19:40

It's no worse than trying to have a sensible discussion on racism. You get shouted down called a racist people retweet you you get threatened over your job all because you don't toe the current pc line (even if a report this week agrees with you). I totally understand unfortunately it is the world we live in today. Whichever group is on top or has the current pc agenda tries to stamp down of the free speech of others. It always has done and always will.

AfternoonToffee · 03/04/2021 19:42

Sorry I should have offered Gin as well as Cake.

Enjoy.

Be assured you are in the right ! Twitter is just an open sewer really. I was so happy to discover only 8% of the worlds people are on it. Felt it justified my decision to leave FlowersSmile
