Are women discriminated against due to their biology?

Kirsty Blackman MP doesn't think that there is much discrimination occuring to women due to biological differences. Do women ever get discriminated against due to issues such as pregnancy?

If only a resource such as "Pregnant then Screwed" was readily available ......

ArabellaScott · 25/03/2021 21:33

Oh, come now, we all know men can get pregnant, too.

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 25/03/2021 21:35

Good point! Pregnancy discrimination isn't discrimination based on gender! How handy for large corporations!

Ah no, and as we all know biology is on a spectrum anyway, so how could that work?

Good point. I've no idea what Kirsty Blackman means by "actual sex"?

sounds pretty transphobic to me.

Agree. I am sure that someone will furnish her with that rainbow graph picture.

I can't imagine an employer ever overlooking a woman for a job or a promotion because she's of an age when she might want to have a baby. Can't imagine female workers at a major supermarket chain having to fight for back pay because the work that men do for the organisation is considered to be of greater value. If only they'd "presented" differently, silly women. And it certainly hasn't been the case that I've witnessed older women being pushed out of organisations because they're not considered to be as valuable as certain other members of staff. No discrimination on the basis of sex to see here.

MissBarbary · 25/03/2021 22:03

This is being discussed on another thread but it's of such "weapons grade stupidity" (to quote Iain Banks from The Crow Road that it deserves its own thread.

MissBarbary · 25/03/2021 22:05

Her follow up is even more awesome.

Are women discriminated against due to their biology?
drspouse · 25/03/2021 22:07

Oh yes, nobody ever gives tiny babies different treatment either. Oh wait...

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 25/03/2021 22:08

"Someone trafficking a perceived girl for FGM"

Bloody hell. That's out there. Does she have any idea how offensive she's being? I'm sure she's got stats on all the "perceived" girls being trafficked for < reads notes > female genital mutilation.

WagnersFourthSymphony · 25/03/2021 22:09

Whatever you call them the child-bearing class of humans has always been discriminated against on the grounds of their various vulnerabilities.

Employers would never pass over giving a woman of childbearing age a job due to fear of her becoming pregnant. It's unheard of!

I can't get my head around her thinking? Is she saying people trafficking girls for FGM don't know that they are female?
OP posts:
eurochick · 25/03/2021 22:14

Anyone trafficking a perceived girl for fun would be in for a surprise. Wt actual f. Has she actually engaged her brain on this at all?

GNCQ · 25/03/2021 22:14

Lord above.
Her argument is "you can never tell"

Well, find me a TW who loses their job after falling pregnant and try saying discrimination is all about appearance.

eurochick · 25/03/2021 22:14

Fgm is not fun autocorrect.

ChakaDakotaRegina · 25/03/2021 22:15

A friend had to reprimand a group of men as they didn’t want to offer a pregnant woman a promotion that was open and ready for her as they didn’t want to ‘stress her out’. They were annoyed as they thought they were being kind!

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 25/03/2021 22:16

What about all the women who rock up to the doctors every month for years because they're anaemic and in agony only to be told they're 'just' having periods, these things are normal, or hey why not let us shove this piece of metal into your uterus, it might help. 8 yrs later they finally get a test or two and find out they have endometriosis or ovarian cysts.

The female children having their external genitalia sewn shut or snipped off aren't being chosen because they identify as girls and feel pretty that day.

The women who are still having mesh inserted that is known to degrade and tear through muscle and skin, to fix prolapses caused by birth injuries aren't being selected for that joy because of their gender identity.

MissBarbary · 25/03/2021 22:17

I also think that I’d like to see the same penalties for someone trafficking a girl for the purposes of FGM as someone trafficking a perceived girl for FGM

I think the whole sentence deserves to be seen. Couple of Twitter responses to it.

^Perhaps she needs to look up the definitions of «FGM» and «trafficking» as the statement she made makes no sense to me. Unless I’ve missed something those are two wholly separate issues

Girls aren't "trafficked" for FGM anyway, they're trafficked for prostitution. There's no profit in FGM; that's not what it's for. And discrimination and abuse are inextricably linked

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 25/03/2021 22:18

What really makes me sad here is that Kirsty Blackman was the OP on this lovely Classics thread back in 2016: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/2679290-Found-a-toy-bunny-outside-the-House-of-Commons

And now she’s saying stuff like this.

Nightbear · 25/03/2021 22:19

That well known problem of people planning to cut off the clitoris of ‘perceived’ girls. Presumably with a theoretical razor blade?
