Julie Birchill defames and racially abuses Ash Sarkar

The lovely Julie Birchill has apologised for defaming and racially abusing Ash Sarkar.

She has issued a full apology for her misogynistic and racist abuse and paid an undisclosed amount of damages. Interesting.

It’s shocking what women have to put up with on line.

Is Julie Burchill lovely? I don't think she thinks of herself as lovely Grin didn't she write an article about being a bitch for the Spectator or something?

Yes, women have awful things said and done to them on and offline. It's disgraceful!

Incidentally, Julie Bindel put this tweet out on the same day as Julie Burchill's apology. I expect lots of people were getting them a bit muddled Smile

I see she is upset at Julie speculating on her sex life. I think Julie was referring to Ash putting out a tweet or something saying she fucked like a champion. If I posted something like that I wouldn't be surprised if people started speculating on how true my claim was, even if I'd written it tongue in cheek. It all got silly and I think Julie shouldn't have paid that much attention to Ash.

yetanotherusernameAgain · 18/03/2021 23:52

Why is your thread title in the present tense?

Anovaneway · 19/03/2021 00:10

A woman is racially and misogynistically abused but why don’t you focus on my grammar?

Do you mean Ash? Your description of Julie Burchill as lovely makes your post a bit confusing.

Julie Burchill is funny and enjoys being mean. Lovely isn’t a word It’d use. She got carried away in a Twitter spat. Hopefully she’s now made amends.

Being a woman on Twitter is awful. Ash Sarkar is far from the only one to have experienced anxiety after being attacked on there.

It did happen a while back though and isn’t current, so I don’t think yetanother was commenting on your grammar, so much as the impression given that this was happening now.

Ineedaneasteregg · 19/03/2021 00:43

I had got the two Julie's confused.
The shame!!!

Anovaneway · 19/03/2021 00:48

AnyOld the lovely comment was a bit of light of sarcasm. Yes she is funny as well and I agree with your points.
It’s the apology that is current as that was this week, rather than the incident itself, so I see what you mean.

I assume OP was being sarcastic.

I must admit I recognise Julie burchills name from these boards but I don't really know who she is or what she does.

I did read about her apology and my god what she did and said sounds awful.

That's all I know.

I don't know who the person she went after is either.

Hibari · 19/03/2021 04:32

She's also had to sack her publisher for being outed as a white supremacist this week.

Poor dear's having a rough week /s Grin

Diaryofamadwoman · 19/03/2021 06:59

'Fucks like a champion' was in Sarkars Twitter bio.

I really can't abide her.

EchoCardioGran · 19/03/2021 08:54

For those who are asking about Julie Bindel.
She is an incredible feminist lawyer who set up Justice for Women. Julie Bindel lives to support women, but doesn't go around seeking personal headlines for her work.

It must be awful to be mistaken for that dreadful self seeker Birchall.

(But then I've had over sixty years of people getting my name wrong.)

SunsetBeetch · 19/03/2021 08:58

Good. She was vile towards Ash.

And I don't even particularly like Ash Sarkar.

Gwynfluff · 19/03/2021 09:03

She is an incredible feminist lawyer who set up Justice for Women.

She's a journalist. Her partner, Harriet Wistrich, is a lawyer and they set up JFW.

Ash Sarkar, as I recall, once said she had done a search on Julie Bindel and Julie had never commented on women in prison and therefore was not bothered about women in this situation. Julie's response was brilliant!

RoyalCorgi · 19/03/2021 09:14

Am always a bit irritated that people can't spell Julie Burchill's name right. It must be annoying for her too.

Much as I find Ash Sarkar immensely annoying, I thought Julie's tweets to her were out of order, and she was right to apologise (though she will have been forced to do so by lawyers).

Doyoumind · 19/03/2021 09:22

I'm pretty sure I saw this being discussed on here earlier in the week, OP.

What are you trying to point out? That women aren't all perfect and can be horrible too? If that's your point I don't think anyone would disagree.

CorvusPurpureus · 19/03/2021 09:34

Well, I'd definitely rather have JB at a dinner party than AS.

But in this instance she was vile, for which she's apologised. Good.

Tibtom · 19/03/2021 09:42

She is an obstreperous woman. We need obstreperous women. But obstreperous women are not kind and cuddly they are difficult and sometimes they do or say stuff that is wrong. If they realise their mistake and apologise then that is good. But we need obstreperous women.

EchoCardioGran · 19/03/2021 09:44

Sorry yes my mistake Gwynfluff.
Still my respect for her stands.

I didn't realise the thread had morphed into dining with the least awful person or being corrected on my spelling of a racist's name.

Well done on putting a black woman who dares to venture here from BMN in her place.

SunsetBeetch · 19/03/2021 09:55

She had to have her hand forced, though.
MaudTheInvincible · 19/03/2021 09:55

Absolutely agree. Julie Bindel is worthy of all our respect, I think. She also denied being Judith Butler on the same day Grin I expect there's a comment there about how middle-aged women become faceless and indistinguishable from each other to some.

Damn them with their similar names Grin

Mixing up Julie Bindel and Judith Butler is pretty funny.

MaudTheInvincible · 19/03/2021 10:06

GrinGrin SunsetBeetch it made me laugh anyway. Mind you, I assumed it was a joke, but maybe someone really did!

CorvusPurpureus · 19/03/2021 10:07

It's the Js.

Hard enough keeping track of all the Jos/Joans/Joanies/Joannes & Janes, never mind the Julies & Judiths.

I blame the 70s...Grin

nauticant · 19/03/2021 10:12

For the current(ish) generation it's going to be the Ks.

Justhadathought · 19/03/2021 10:17

Julie Birchill has always been a gobby provocateur. She refuses to toe any line, and as a result can sometimes go too far. She can cut straight to the nub of things, though.
