Sexuality according to gender

If we are to accept that gender identity is seperate to gender expression, and ones own sense of gender has no bearing on how one presents/looks/feels/acts; how can anyone state they are exclusively attracted to women (referring to gender identity), when the only thing seemingly binding those people together is the belief they are women?

I think the logical incoherence here is a big part of why umbrella terms like 'queer' and 'pansexual' are being pushed over those boring old 'gay' or 'lesbian' labels.
