www.spectator.co.uk/article/confessions-of-a-lifelong-bitch
I am just such a big fan of those women who were labelled 'bitches' and this article brought back to me how much we seem to be losing. Were they a product of the 60's (ish you might find a better date). We know 'be kind' is bad for girls.

We had 'killing eve' but she was a psychopath, so considered out on the edges. The fact that the programme hit very high viewing figures tells us there's a thirst for non-conventional women, can the 'be kind' tribe be saved?

"Bitch" is a horrible word- is this some sort of bizarre feminist version of the way some black people "reclaim" the n word?

No thanks.

SirChing · 16/03/2021 21:41

Copying my post across from another thread.

Burchill has always required her supporters to overlook and minimise her repellant behaviour. Along with many other GC "heroes".

Nothing wrong with being GC. Everything wrong with throwing your lot in with feminists who are only GC because they are in fact bigots in lots of areas.

The rights of women and girls are purely incidental side effects in their condemnation of difference, NOT their starting point.

Seeing GC feminists doing a giant "pick me dance" for their support is nauseating.

@unwashedanddazed

She's always put her foot in it. It's part of why I love her so much!
Pathetic.
Livinginthecity · 16/03/2021 22:22

I dislike Sarkar intensely especially after her "I am literally a Communist" comment on Breakfast TV but JB crossed a line mounting a bullying campaign against her. Unacceptable.

Zevia · 16/03/2021 22:35

While I'm (genuinely) sure it wasnt your intention, 'bullying campaign' feels slightly minimizing (unless you add the qualifiers 'Racist and Misogynist').

unwashedanddazed · 16/03/2021 23:31

I don't think it's 'pathetic' to accept that people have flaws. I've been reading her stuff since NME days and during the last 40 odd years she's offended every demographic going. She's very even handed in her vitriol. I've often disagreed with her (and, if you it makes you feel better, this is one of those occasions), but I don't go in for cancellation.

I like my humans human, not perfect.

Zevia · 17/03/2021 02:28

She spearheaded a racist, misogynistic hate campaign against another woman and you identified that as her 'putting her foot in it' and declared it part of what you love about her. That is not simply a case of 'refusing to hold someone to a standard of perfection'. I think the PP's response to your comment was quite restrained.

SirChing · 17/03/2021 02:33

I like my humans human, not perfect

Wow, I wouldn't admit to liking my humans to be bullying, racist misogynists, but hey, you do you Confused

I can only assume this is a cover for the abject apology printed yesterday as part fo the court case including damages she has had to pay out. Racism, islamophobia, misogeny.... so many things and I personally would not be supporting someone who was found guilty in a court of law of comitting against another woman.
GrammarTeacher · 17/03/2021 06:55

What she wrote and encouraged was just plain dreadful. Not only racist and islamophobic but liked comments others made encouraging Ash to kill herself! This was utterly hideous. JB engaged in a hideous campaign of bullying. The fact she is still being published despite this shows that journalism is now all about click bait rather than actual journalism.
I don't mind people having imperfections. This is significantly more than that. If someone posted a thread about a family member having this opinions on her they would be encouraged to go NC. How on Earth any one can define themselves as feminist and behave like this towards a woman is beyond me!

Defmy · 17/03/2021 11:28

I don't go in for cancellation.

Does that mean toxic people have to be offered a platform every time they vent? There are enough toxic listeners encouraging them. How do you suggest utterly toxic people are censured when they're engaging in harassment and racist bullying? What about the humanity of their victims who don't command the column inches?

Defmy · 17/03/2021 11:29

She's a deeply unwell woman with some kind of personality disorder. She shouldn't have influence.

Zevia · 17/03/2021 17:19

I see that she has now 'cancelled' her new publisher, because the publisher was (also) a racist.

Not sure how this fits in with the theme of her book but there we go.

Livinginthecity · 21/03/2021 19:06

As a cokehead of some 30 years, she has participated in some of the vilest crime syndicates operating in drug trafficking like La Camorra in Italy and Escobar in Colombia. I don't know if these middle class people think too much about that when they're snorting their lines.

KimThomas · 21/03/2021 19:31

Here’s what JB has said about her cocaine use: www.google.com/amp/s/www.spectator.co.uk/article/cocaine/amp

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/03/2021 20:39

Her line "the humanitarian aid worker who justifies buying sex with impoverished women because he is, after all, one of the good guys" isn't all of it; I have heard it justified, quite seriously and by a woman working for the UN, as a way for more foreign currency (for which read dollars) to be injected into the local economy.

I didn't know whether to scream or be sick.

Livinginthecity · 22/03/2021 09:20

I started reading one of her novels once and gave up after a few pages.

RoyalCorgi · 22/03/2021 09:59

She's a very hard person to pin down. Sometimes she is brilliant and incisive and finds exactly the right way to make you understand a particular issue. At other times she is woefully wrong about stuff. She is extremely judgemental about other people, especially if they are, in her view, a "hypocrite". If you take the cocaine stuff, she now says she has to live with the knowledge that she took part in a harmful trade, but that information was available to her for a very long time before she gave it up. You can imagine that if it had been someone else taking the cocaine she'd have been yelling "hypocrite" at them vociferously.

outedbyfaircop · 22/03/2021 10:19

oh dear oh dear, all this accidental hanging around with anti semitic white supremacists is not a good look is it, not when you’re having a scrap over who is and isn’t ‘on the right side of history’.
