Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Are the 3 walkouts from Government LGBT panel in fact about detransitioning?

I haven't followed this story closely, so dont know all the details.

But I was struck by this sentence in a newspaper report this morning where it says:

" ... the Government pledges to end the practice (of conversion therapy) only where it refers to sexuality and not gender identity. ... "

So was the campaign to ban conversion therapy for gay men and lesbians actually being used to sneak through banning anyone who challenges the affirmative pathway to transgenderism and / or detransition support?

I think you're spot on, and they threw hissy fits when people found out.

nauticant · 12/03/2021 13:49

I'd say it's about making sure the affirmation-only model will not get undermined and in the longer term it's to make the Keira Bell decision moot (as insurance against the Court of Appeal confirming the decision in the High Court).

Yes I think so, Trojan horse tactic.

There are a couple of threads discussing if you're interested:

Definitely. The number of MPs on twitter who just don't get the nuance of what it means is depressing.

YouSetTheTone · 12/03/2021 14:06

Mollyollydolly I'm speaking to my MP soon - what in a nutshell should I inform him about regarding this? Sorry to ask, and if you don't have time I'll go through the threads above this weekend!

FindTheTruth · 12/03/2021 14:06

detransitioners voices will not be heard as long as the APPG panel control the LGBT narrative.

Yes OP, in part it is about stopping detransitioning support. but as part of wanting queer theory gender ideology to be the only official' LGBT narrative in the APPG, law, parliament, NHS and public body policy. these voices must be heard by MPs and in committees in westminster.

There are two really good articles by Jo which reflect my concerns .. hope they help.

Thanks for the responses - and links.

As I said I hadn't reallly kept up with this. There are so many important issues at the moment and I shift from thinking I should focus more deeply on a few and then think I really need to keep up with what is going on as whose knows what will happen next.

Hope to find time over the weekend to maybe catch up. Before the onslaught. Sad

This is so important for us to email our MPs about.

YouSetTheTone · 12/03/2021 22:00

Thanks Mollyollydolly I’ve read through those articles and they’re helpful.

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 12/03/2021 23:10

Interesting thread which is relevant to your question OP:

"The campaign is driven by LGBTQ+ organizations including Mermaids, Stonewall, and Gendered Intelligence, so we know from the start that the agenda can’t be pro-gay"

Rabbit - I think there are many organisation who campaign quite genuinely against conversion therapy being used to "cure" someone of their sexuality.

I think many had no idea that there was an additional part to the campaign relating to transgenderism.

Was it always there or was it added later?

Also we note that the gvmt equality advisor who quit was a TW. Just saying.

The press and BBC never mention this, & it just has to be relevant. ( mnhq - this info is all out there & easy to find on the web, this is not anything secret! & this advisor went to an all male college ffs.)

OhHolyJesus · 13/03/2021 07:47

Yes I think so and it's because they haven't met with the GEO since July 2019, they don't have the influence they hoped for and expected, given the history of stonewall's influence and the panel expires at the end of the month.

Maximum flounce for some news coverage. Minimum responsibility.

OhHolyJesus · 13/03/2021 11:41

This has been announced - round 2?

www.gov.uk/government/news/government-launches-g7-gender-equality-advisory-council

Sarah Sands in Chair and she comes from Bright Blue, an independent, conservatism liberal think tank.

One of their ten principles:

Evidence not ideology.
We should be open-minded to new thinking, applying solutions to public policy problems on the basis of good ideas rather than tired ideology.

Sounds good to me!

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 13/03/2021 13:26

This feels like really positive news
