ITV:

EXCLUSIVE: The government is creating a "hostile environment" for LGBT+ people, according to its own equalities advisor.

Resigning in protest, @JayneOzanne accuses some of becoming "Ministers for Inequality", particularly over conversion therapy.

BBC reporter tweets:

NEW: A second member of the Govt's #LGBT Advisory Panel tells me they're also quitting

James Morton says he's been “very concerned for several months that Liz Truss and her junior ministers are not committed to LGBT equality.”

Lots of calls for Truss to go on Twatter as you can imagine. She's really hacked them off by standing up for women.

@Mollyollydolly

The replies to Paul Brand's twitter feed are heartening. More people are seeing right through this.
I read the comments under the tweets about Starmer saying what Labour would do.

Yet again it seems that even total capitulation is inadequate - it was full of Twitter TRAs claiming that Labour is transphobic.

@30PercentRecycled

Let's hope Allison Bailey or someone of her calibre will step in to take up one of the roles.

Might be handy to have someone there who understands the law as well as LGB issues. That'd be a change for the better.

That would be amazing.
TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 11/03/2021 15:52

I read that as 1 seat for Stonewall (and the other 2 to other trans lobby groups, but 9 seats in total so plenty of room to dilute the crazy and it might actually be inclusive of other minority groups voices.

Yes, you're right, just re-read.

Trans activists have been very effective with "LGB and of course T as well" in the changes they've pushed for over the past couple of decades. For the issue of conversion therapy it works so long as people just take the surface message: conversion therapy is bad for LGBT. But it doesn't take much thinking to come up with "is conversion therapy for LGB the same as conversion therapy for T and should they be tackled in the same way?" Looking at the way this is being handled by most of the media they'll probably get away with it this time but I think questioning noises from the public are growing.

@TheRabbitOfCaerbannog

And Stonewall automatically granted three seats at the table.
Like bishops in the House of Lords. A British institution.

But not in a good way.

As I've been bumbling about doing my normal life things I've heard Ozanne on Politics Live, Times Radio and 5live. Certainly not short on media coverage and not one journalist asks the important question which is 'What do they mean by conversion therapy.'

@highame

Apologies I just checked and got that wrong, there is lots of Pauls on the commitee but not Paul Brand

nauticant · 12/03/2021 17:16

It's being reported that Liz Truss said the government will shortly be bringing forward plans to ban conversion therapy. So it looks like the pressure applied by the 3 resignations and the subsequent storm in the media was effective.

Keeping an open mind I don't know whether this is a commitment to having a bill go through Parliament or something else.

Let's see whether there's anything specific stated in relation to what "conversion therapy" means for T people so we can have an idea whether it will have an impact on affirmation-only therapy and the Keira Bell decision.

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 12/03/2021 17:46

Slightly cheered by this quote from Boris Johnson in the article, which suggests that content isn't finalised

“It is technically complex to deal with but we’re determined to take further steps to stamp it out.”

So long as the law is well-drafted I welcome it.

If it successfully tackles the problem of homophobic people trying to trans out the gay that will be a huge benefit to both homosexual and gender dysphoric people. The NHS Gender Identity Service have identified this homophobia as a real issue. I hope the staff, past and present who have experienced this will be invited to advise on the legislation.
