The hidden femicide victims - older women

“Until three years ago, women of Ruth Williams’s age would not have been counted in the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). Then, it had a cap of 59 years, now it is 74, and is due to be raised next year, excluding institutions such as care homes and refuges; a hidden death toll.”

“If you are found at the bottom of the stairs at 40, the police are probably going to ask questions,” says Bows, one of the few researchers working in the area. “Deeply entrenched ageism means that if you are 80, it’s, ‘Well, she probably fell.”

“Invisibility, devaluation and derision towards the older woman is added to everyday misogyny,”

Thread about Ruth Williams here:

He was found not guilty of murder.

I really don't understand why they had a cap on the age in the first place and given there was one, why it wasn't flagged in the stats in neon lights.

I mean cutting out data on VAWG because of the age of the woman.. oh well that doesn't count because she's getting on a bit? Why did they even do that? Have they ever given a justification?

One of the other threads said it was something to do with an online survey, which they didn't think older women would be able to do or some such guff. ConfusedHmm

Huh?

That doesn't sound right.

If it's the national crime survey that's been going for yonks and is a cross section who are interviewed I think.

If it's official stats then they are from police reports etc so again that excuse doesn't wash.
