Is there any way to find out....

What proportion of people (by sex) in a city work part time? To be able to compare with another city. I can’t think how I would be able to find this out or who (if anyone) would have the data?

Hmmmm.... Maybe you will have to ask the ONS (for England and Wales) or the NRS (for Scotland). Or maybe have to ask the local authority for each city. Hopefully someone here knows.

I only did a quick search and found this
www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/employmentandemployeetypes/datasets/fulltimeparttimeandtemporaryworkersseasonallyadjustedemp01sa

The spreadsheet has separate tabs for men and women.

You could try contacting the Women's Budget group or possibly Fawcett.

And it might be something that the TUC has figures on.

But by individual city is I think going to be hard, unless the local council collects those stats.

And even if the Census has info like that it would now be 10 years out of date.

Thanks @stumbledin and @NonnyMouse1337! I will take a look. The reason I’m after it by city is because in Edinburgh the schools finish at lunch time on Fridays - this is a permanent set up and not Covid related. I’m just wondering if this has a disproportionate affect on women’s working patterns- just out of my own interest really.

Does the city council not have stats on their web site? My local borough does.

And sorry for duplicate link with nonnymouse - the post wasn't there when I started typing, but I am quite slow!

Aha!! I think I might have found it!

If it's just for Scotland you can get it on the statistics.gov.scot website, not the easiest site to use though! I have run a quick query from there to give all the local authorities showing number of people in full and part time employment for female/male/all, it's saved here statistics.gov.scot/carts/b3cc8c87-ac45-4c6b-b4ea-d87e3197fb65 - if you click on the csv download link it will open up in Excel to give you all the figures. Contents tab shows you what's in the query. I'm not sure how to get the same info on England & Wales, thought it would be on Nomisweb.co.uk but can't seem to get down to City level.

Ahhhh @stumbledin & @malloo you are amazing thank you!! I will take a look tomorrow when I’m not just on my phone but that’s really helpful thank you so much!

Census data would have it but it would be contaminated by the dodgy guidance on the sex question

EdinburghFeminist · 08/03/2021 13:57

Hey @malloo thanks for your help with this. Turns out that 40% of women in Edinburgh are part time compared to 11% of men and 36% of women in Glasgow (which doesn’t have schools closing at lunchtime on a Friday) but it’s also 40% for women in Aberdeen so I probably need to cross it with number of women with kids to make it more useful. Thanks so much for your help!
