James Caspian's detransitioners research - ECHR application declined

James Caspian's application for a hearing at the European Court of Human Rights has been declined - the UK courts also declined previously. They declined due to procedural matters rather than the content of the case.

James is the researcher who is trying to challenge Bath Spa University’s refusal to allow his research into people who reverse gender reassignment - they refused on the basis that it might attract unpleasant comments on social media.

I'm disappointed as I think it's so important to gather more data on this. In fact, after the judges in Keira's case noted the lack of follow-up data, I wonder if he might be successful if he applied to do a similar research project now.

The below interview with James in Spiked is a bit old now (Feb 2019) but he covers some very relevant points - including conversion therapy which I saw a new thread about today:

Contemptible. To think our universities used to be admired.

ArabellaScott · 06/03/2021 22:22

I hope when the courts start shouting for evidence on the subject that Bath Spa University are suitably ashamed of themselves.

FindTheTruth · 06/03/2021 22:28

Question for Academics...Could James do the research without Bath Spa? Independently? with another uni? crowdfunded?

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 06/03/2021 22:40

It would be brilliant if some other university snapped James and his research up! Every piece of genuine research shines more sunlight on the nonsensical beliefs of the genderist lobby.

SybillTrelawney · 06/03/2021 22:45

I was just wondering the same, @FindTheTruth...

Evarish · 06/03/2021 22:47

Assuming this to still be the same 'study' of his' he's trying to push through, James' previous submissions were rejected not because of the responses it might get, but because his entire study was based on 4 indivuduals (which means he couldn't guarantee the protection of those 4 people's private information when the... study... would be released, nor could it really be called a study with the nature that it had, given that it would require a larger sampling size).

I am absolutely convinced by the little picture with no references that Evarish has posted.

What would you like me to add?

Same here.

It is such an important piece of the puzzle that I cannot believe they are not racing to get some research into detransitioners. Trans people deserve to know if there is anyway to figure out who is going to regret such a big decision, to avoid those 100% convinced teenagers that go the full Monty and a few years later realise it was a costly mistake.

I think even better of James when I see people trying to trash his important work.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 06/03/2021 23:27

It could be at the time of his proposal there were very few detransitioners known to him. Now, there are many, many more

Strikemepink · 06/03/2021 23:50

Evarish links for the screenshots would be good.

I’m not speaking as an academic but from a data protection perspective, that does seem like an incredibly small sample size.

MoleSmokes · 07/03/2021 01:00

Evarish - Caspian wanted to expand the study beyond the original plan and that was when Bath Spa got cold feet:

"I went to Bath Spa University and enrolled on an MA course in counselling and psychotherapy. The vast bulk of that course was a piece of research of one’s choosing and my intention was to research detransitioning. After two years of learning about research methodology, I put in a proposal to do a qualitative study into people who had reversed gender reassignment surgery. And the university passed it, saying the proposal was good.

But then I had problems getting people to talk to me about their experience. One man who had detransitioned contacted me to say they were too traumatised to speak about it.

Then I was contacted by the spokeswoman for a group of young women in the USA. These women had transitioned to male, taken testosterone and many of them had their breasts removed. They regretted the decision and reversed their transitions, but they did not reverse their surgery. ‘We just live with the scars’, they said.

So I went back to the university to ask to broaden the study to people who had reversed their transition but without necessarily reversing the surgery. But when I submitted this to the university’s ethics committee, they rejected it. They said that to undertake research into a potentially ‘politically incorrect’ subject (their words) could result in criticism of the research and the university on social media. I was absolutely flabbergasted."

Caspian had worked with trans people for years; in many ways he’s an ally. He would have been a sympathetic researcher.

The research will get done sooner or later, but the next researchers are likely to be much more critical and less accepting of the party line.

FindTheTruth · 07/03/2021 04:50

If James proposed the research elsewhere with a large cohort (to protect participant privacy) and set up a crowdfunder, would it get donations? would you donate to it? (I would donate ALOT to this personally. It's important.). So... WHY isn't it happening? what's stopping it? What Bath Spa did is wrong. and there have been legal actions to try and change their minds. But in the meantime, can someone in Academia explain what the blockers are to doing this somewhere else?

NotBadConsidering · 07/03/2021 04:54

We have no idea why there are so many teenage girls presenting to gender clinics and we have no idea what happens to them in their early twenties, let alone beyond after being on puberty blockers and testosterone. Not only do we not know, but none of the gender clinics have publicly announced any research into these two areas, nor shown any interest or concern about doing so. It’s scandalous.

sonnysunshine · 07/03/2021 05:09

Maybe he should do a longer study of some of the many people presenting to clinics and where they are in 1/2/5/10 years. That would provide a wider view and overtime will find more people detransitioning as well as those who may be happy with the decision. Providing a deeper understanding of why transitioning is problematic for many (but not all) and how to prevent so many people going down that.route inappropriately.

FindTheTruth · 07/03/2021 05:09

James Caspian < waves >

Whilst the legal action is important, your research is more important. so if (and I believe anything is possible) you reach out to get support to find a place to do this, you've got a big community behind you, such as:

FindTheTruth · 07/03/2021 05:12

agree Notbad and Sonny. It really needs a massive study. People's lives have been devastated. The truth must come out

Terranean · 07/03/2021 23:33

Sony that’s what a good ethical research committee of any decent university would have suggested as feedback to a masters project proposal. How to surpass the problems not how to silence the researcher.

Many of the research that trans ideology pushes as scientific is riddle with ethical problems like lack of control groups, small and self-selected sampling with very little guarantees that the candidates comply with selection criteria, self-referencing ad Infinitum and lack of basis in reality. Like using the biological reproduction of clown fish as a metaphor of how human can change sex. I don’t mean to be disrespectful of the main body on gender Dysphoria by the way. More the kind of gender/sex as a spectrum and jelly babies or toddlers pulling their hair does as evidence of transness research.

agree @Terranean any decent University would have wanted to get to the truth for the sake of all people. With data and science and facts, the clueless policy makers and MPs will have the insight to make decisions.
