New survey from US on LGBTQ shows young women less likely to identify as lesbian, more likely to say bisexaul

I heard this reported on Radio 4's PM programme were that idiot school boy sniggered all through the segment (which he does most of the time anyway).

But he did manage to engage his brain to notice that although younger people are more likely to think they are gay or queer, young women seem less keen to say they are lesbian. The woman being interviewed seemed equally at sea and unable to answer, but said she thought it was because lesbianism was sexualised by society.

Funnily enough (ha ha no surprise really) neither Evan Davis for the special reporter talked about the harassment of lesbians.

Another male view of the world confirmed by the BBC.

Cant find a proper report on this but here are some figures from one newspaper:
• Women are more likely than men to identify as LGBTQ (6.4% vs 4.9%.)
• Women are more likely to identify as bisexual than men (4.3% vs 1.8%.)

No, it's not because they're sexualised by society.

Its because these days it's a sin to declare, as a woman, that you have a right to a personal choice of sexual orientation which recognises sex classes and excludes all male people from your body. And this renders you vulnerable to anger, shunning, name calling, bullying and cancelling. What young woman is going to sign up to that?

Declare that you're bi or pan and you are passed over as a target.

This is apparently progress.

Just seen since. Note he was formerly a Guardian journalist!

Journalist Glenn Greenwald faces backlash after falsely claiming ‘decrease’ in lesbians is due to trans men
uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/journalist-glenn-greenwald-faces-backlash-151327226.html

Just on a side note, it has become more and more obvious that the yahoo news service is now exclusively trans positive. It goes out of its way to report stories that talk about terf violence against trans people etc.. eg this latest story "Lesbian peer Baroness Barker tears down tired transphobic arguments in powerful House of Lords speech" uk.news.yahoo.com/lesbian-peer-baroness-barker-tears-182932481.html

Not sure what % of people use yahoo as their search engine, new source but really disturbing to see such unchallenged bias.

Declare that you're bi or pan and you are passed over as a target

This is so sad for all of its implications.

What is happening to young people. It feels like this is another form of footbinding.

I heard that. I did wonder whether the statistics for men and women were accurate in the way we might expect them to be... would a trans man who is attracted to females be counted in the statistics as LGBTQ, but as a straight man? Would a transwomen attracted to women be counted as a lesbian woman in the statistics? I would assume that the survey would go with TWAW, or leave it up to the respondants. But I don't know. So it is hard to know what the statistics really mean.

DdraigGoch · 25/02/2021 21:59

I'm not sure that I follow the same conclusions as other posters. I'm sure that I've heard of studies saying that women were more likely to be bi than men which date from long before the current trans war.

news.gallup.com/poll/329708/lgbt-identification-rises-latest-estimate.aspx

I think this is the survey?
It shows that the % people identifying as trans has overtaken the % of people identifying as lesbian. L1.4%/ T1.8%.

It is hard to establish facts though as transwomen can identify as lesbian or as straight women and may not be counted in the survey as 'trans'.
It does seem to show that shows a significant rise in LGBT identification across the board, with identification as bisexual rocketing up to 11.5% of generation Z, the % of trans is climbing faster than L&G.

AbsintheFriends · 25/02/2021 23:31

I heard it too, and thought it seemed like Evan and the reporter were both awkwardly tiptoeing around the elephant in the room, which is that the T is not a sexual orientation, and is in fact a complicating factor in stats surrounding the reporting of sexual orientation.

At one point I seem to remember they came perilously close to stumbling over the elephant and retreated hastily, to conclude the report without leaving anybody any the wiser about anything.

(Meanwhile, over in the HoL, real news was happening. Quick - look over there! Squirrel!)

stumbledin · 25/02/2021 23:36

I think just on a % basis of the increase in gay men in the younger age group you would think a similar increase in lesbian women.

That's what this is about.

Okay, have gone all nerdy and done some sums based on Xoxoxoxoxoxox's link, and if you take the Baby Boomer figures for gay men and lesbian in fact the increase in the number of gay men and lesbians in Generation Z is the same level of increase.

And the increase in trans slightly less!

So in fact although a similar minimal increase in lesbian and gay men, and comparitvely smaller increase in trans, the real increase is those who identify as bi-sexual!

Might have known the BBC wouldn't even bother to do the sums.

Feel a bit silly for starting this thread on the basis of believing something broadcast by the BBC.

It was worth it for clarifying the problems with the statistics though.

I realised the problems with the census, but I had not really understood the rather obvious problems with LGBT statistics.

Pudmyboy · 26/02/2021 22:52

Yes@stumbledin I have noticed Yahoo news has changed dramatically: for a while comments were not allowed as they were trying to ensure a safe environment (cannot remember the original wording but it was something like that) but it was obvious what was going to happen, they used to have a range of views from Daily Mail to Pink News but it has definitely been captured now; I never use it these days as I would end up taking all my blood pressure medication in one go.

DisgustedofManchester · 28/02/2021 12:21

Gross misrepresentation by people here. Not all trans people a biologically female. Nearly half are biologically male. There is no correlation to be drawn between trans numbers and sexuality because trans is a mix of biological sexes and sexuality is subsets of those.

Unless of course you think all trans people are trans men and straight.

stumbledin · 28/02/2021 16:16

DisgustedofManchester - you obviosly haven't read all the comments.

I clearly stated in my second comment that the media had misrepresented the information.

And from the stats in the article at news.gallup.com/poll/329708/lgbt-identification-rises-latest-estimate.aspx that the increase in those identifying as gay or lesbian had risen at the same rate and that by comparison the trans identity had slightly reduced.

The increase is in bisexuality as an identity and the article doesnt have a breakdown althuogh says women are more likely to identify as bi than men. (2% difference)
